Build turning tool holder yourself - is that possible?

Again and again, the attempt is made to build a lathe - or at least essential parts of it - yourself. For special projects you often need a special holder. In many cases, suitable holders are not available - this leaves only the DIY.

Basic options for DIY

Special holder systems can be built, if you have enough expertise. In general, you should know enough about turning to be able to correctly and correctly plan machine parts.

Build quick change holder

Frequently, quick-change systems are built because such systems are often only inappropriate to get. For such systems you will find some instructions including the necessary drawings for planning in the network.

With sufficient expertise, you can then modify these existing, fully drawn plans and, above all, resize them to an appropriate size.

Basic approach to construction

exchangeable cassettes

The turning tool holders are made of brass parts in most designs. The first step is the construction of the exchangeable cassettes. They are later pushed into the container with a dovetail guide so that a height adjustment is possible, an adjusting screw is attached (Allen bolt and counter-screws).

The turning tool lies in the exchangeable cassettes in a milled groove and is held there by several Allen screws. This allows the fixing of different turning tools.

For the production of these cassettes and a milling machine is necessary. Of course, you can also produce a required milling cutter yourself - assuming expertise and skill - from steel itself.

Fixation for the exchangeable cassettes

The cassettes are fixed in most plans by a pressure wave and a pressure block. It is important that the pressure wave is eccentric, so that the pressure block is pressed forward against the cassettes.
The pressure wave must also be fixed accordingly. In most cases, this is achieved by a puncture and a compression spring and a ball.

After the construction of the exchangeable cassettes and the fixation, only one matching basic body has to be produced. The dovetail guide for the exchangeable cassettes is milled in at the front. In the container, indexing makes sense to facilitate later alignment at the correct angle to the workpiece.

Tips & Tricks

Such projects certainly belong to the master class of metalworking. However, if you are familiar with such work, DIY can be quite a rewarding and exciting project.
