Drinking water temperature - what is normal?

The temperature of our tap water is not insignificant. Everything depends on the water temperature, where the temperature of tap water in Germany usually lies and which risk certain temperatures hold with the drinking water, explained in detail this contribution.

Temperature-dependent properties of water

Not only the pH of water changes greatly with temperature, but also the electrical conductivity. For measurements of these values, always indicate the temperature at the time of the measurement. Standardized measurements usually take place at 20° C water temperature.

The chemical properties, such as the dissolving power of water often change significantly with the water temperature.

Health effects depending on the water temperature

Many eastern medical schools recommend drinking only warm or warmer water. In this way, the organism can process the water best, they say.

Too cold water deprives the body of energy, which must first bring it to body temperature in the stomach, which is very energy-intensive.

In contrast, water in the temperature range between 12 and 15° C is preferred in our latitudes. Under 5 - 6° C we usually find it too unpleasant cold, above 15° C it tastes bland and stale.

Tap water temperature

As our pipes are buried deep in the ground, cold water generally maintains a temperature of approximately 15° C throughout the year.

In countries where the pipes are laid more superficially, however, the temperature of cold water can quickly reach over 20° C. This is particularly detrimental to bacterial growth - lines with too hot water tend to germinate very quickly.

However, there is no limit in the Drinking Water Ordinance for the cold water temperature. The underlying EU standard 98/83 / EC has decided not to set a limit due to differences in individual countries.

There is a particular risk with excessively warm tap water, especially for legionella.

Tips & Tricks

Too high chilled water temperature can also be caused by structural defects. It should be corrected as much as possible.

FAQ - 💬

👉 – Svalbarði Polar Iceberg Water The best temperature for drinking water is room temperature (20°C / 68°F) for maximum flavour, or chilled cold (6°C / 43°F) for maximum refreshment. However, there are different types of water, a myriad of reasons we drink it, and varying personal preferences.

👉 Our body temperature normally sits at 37 degrees C (98.6 F). When we are overheating from being in hot climates or exercising too hard, then our body craves cold water, however drinking cold water may not do it any good at this time.

👉 Today, water temperature is commonly measured on one of three scales: Celsius, Fahrenheit or Kelvin 2. When using the Celsius or Fahrenheit scales, temperature is measured in degrees.

👉 Room temperature is generally considered to be 20°C (68°F). America's first water sommelier, Martin Riese, explains that cold water numbs the cells in the mouth, preventing the detection of all the nuanced taste sensations which room temperature allows: In this video, when Martin uses the term "aromas" he refers to taste sensations.
