Rigips dowels - the load capacity

Rigips- or plasterboard or drywall are the current state of the art in interior design and accordingly widespread. Along with this, the properties of walls and ceilings are also changing. This is an important question for the residents, because where is the carrying capacity of a Rigips dowel?

Rigips versus plasterboard

First, however, a clarification: "Rigips" is a brand name for plasterboard of Saint-Gobain Rigips GmbH, but has become colloquially accepted for plasterboard (GK or GK plates). Therefore, we use the term here also colloquially and is not a targeted product recommendation.

Gypsum plasterboard (GK) is now an integral part of the entire interior design

At the latest in the 1990s, Rigips has prevailed for the fast and efficient interior. Gypsum plasterboards can be found today in the entire interior:

  • in the bathroom (green GK panels that are resistant to moisture)
  • as direct wall covering (instead of plaster)
  • as partitions
  • as cladding for on-wall installations (WC, fittings)
  • as a direct ceiling cladding
  • in the form of suspended ceilings

It quickly becomes clear that not only dowel holes for pictures or light shelves are needed in the plasterboard. Even heavy wall cabinets for kitchens and other furnishings must be securely fastened.

The load capacity of dry components are regulated according to DIN

So you must first orientate yourself on the load-bearing capacity of dowels. However, the load capacity is not exclusively dependent on the direct properties of the relevant anchor. Rather, the load-bearing capacity of the drywall and drywall ceilings must also be taken into account. Among other things in the DIN 18180 and DIN 18182 find the information on the load-bearing capacity of GK and drywall constructions.

Special features such as single-layer or multi-layered construction

In this case, for example, the payloads according to the plate thickness and the quantity (plates mounted double), the distance of the mounting base, etc. are taken into account. The load-bearing capacity for anchors is then limited to 1 m and optionally 1 plate, starting from these values. The load depth of the parts to be fastened also has an influence.

Load capacity of drywall anchors according to dowel type

With the Rigips dowels themselves, you must also differentiate the types of dowels in terms of load capacity. Afterwards, the following statements on the carrying capacity of plasterboard anchors can be made. Plastic dowels for GK have a load capacity of 25 kg in one layer, with two layers of GK boards 40 kg.

Always consider the maximum load capacity of the GK construction

For metal cavity dowels, the payload increases by 5 to 10 kg. In addition there are spring-loaded dowels. With the appropriate Rigips construction (single-layer according to the applicable DIN), however, the permissible load-bearing capacity of the GK panel per meter is also a maximum of 40 kg.

Make sure that the dry components comply with DIN

In newer buildings, which were built according to the building standards and regulations, there is no problem. However, it is problematic in objects in which self-draining drywall or drywall walls were pulled, which do not meet the requirements. When collecting or purchasing such an object, you should always confirm in writing that the drywall interior work has been carried out in accordance with the regulations.

Tips & Tricks

If the plasterboard or drywall panels are attached directly to the substrate, you can also use dowels that are placed directly in the ground. In kitchens, a metal profile is often placed in the drywall in the typical area for wall cabinets.
