Rigips dowel goes through

Drywall and ceilings are now standard in interior design. Therefore, the use of dowels has changed accordingly. Special drywall or GK dowels are used. It often happens that such a Rigips dowel is spinning. What you can do then and where the cause is to be found, we have summarized here for you.

Plasterboard dowels are most commonly used today

Since the 1990s at the latest, interior work has been carried out mainly with drywall components. Generally this means that mainly plasterboard (GK) are used. The usual structure is the GK-plate on a stud work or a suspended plasterboard ceiling.

Different types of dowels for drywall constructions

This in turn means that there is a cavity behind the plate. Therefore, you can not use conventional all-purpose dowels, as they have been used most frequently for a long time. Instead, special Rigips dowels are used. There are different versions here:

  • GK dowels, self-tapping
  • hollow wall anchors
  • Spring toggle bolts

Use plasterboard dowels (GK dowels) correctly

Plasterboard dowels are visually very similar to the insulating dowels. They have a helical external thread that works self-tapping. The GK dowel is screwed in using a special attachment for the cordless screwdriver or the drill. This attachment is included in the delivery of high-quality dowels.

Why spin GK dowels fast

When screwing in you have to be extremely careful and sensitive. Once the dowel is flush, you must stop screwing. Otherwise, the cutting thread destroys the structure of the GK plate and the dowel rotates empty.

You also have to select the screw size used exactly as specified by the manufacturer. A just too big screw turns tight in the dowel. Then turn the dowel yourself and the thread again destroys the plasterboard structure.

GK dowels not suitable for every GK construction

In addition, these dowels require the highest possible strength of the GK plate. The stronger the Rigips plate is, the better and stronger the dowel sits. Some dowel manufacturers therefore recommend the use of GK dowels only with a minimum of two-layer wall construction.

Procedure when the Rigips dowel is spinning empty

If the GK dowel now turns empty, remove it and replace it with a cavity dowel. Especially with single-layer GK superstructures, this anchor is considerably more efficient in its tight fit.

The plastering of a GK-Dübels is not really helpful, since the carrying capacity is considerably limited. When mounting plasterboard dowels, always pay attention to the carrying capacity of the dowels in plasterboard.

Tips & Tricks

If you want or need to continue using the spinning Rigips dowel, you can use the following tricks for designs that require little bearing capacity. Pull the dowel out of the hole and fill it with melted plastic using a hot glue gun and immediately insert the Rigips dowel. Alternatively, you can also use a special mounting adhesive for dowels.
