Fill with plaster and grind if necessary

The filling of plasterboard must meet different requirements for evenness, depending on the type of cladding material later on. If plaster is applied to the filled surface or structured wallpaper such as woodchip is applied, sanding can be dispensed with. For paintings and fine wallpaper it is indispensable.

Choose the appropriate quality level

Filler works are divided into four quality levels. At the lowest level 1, sanding is eliminated, as no smoothing is required to apply plaster or coarse textured wallpaper. Whether it is necessary to grind at level 2 and 3 is determined by the personal claim, the level of skill of the client and the following cladding material. Level 4 and, if necessary, level 3 must always be sanded when painting directly on the leveled surface.

In terms of labor, the labor-intensive filling of surfaces followed by sanding can be replaced by plastering. A plaster "rejoices" even over tilled bumps, as they form anchor and breakpoints. For the frequent surface treatment method, spatulate, prime and paint, sanding is obligatory.

Abrasives and grains

Dried putty is very fine-grained and must be sanded with grit sizes from 400. Hand grinders with a rectangular grinding surface are best suited for grinding work, which is usually limited to the joints and screw holes. Two decisive factors must be taken into account when filling and grinding plasterboard.

1. Canting and valley valleys must be avoided at all costs
2. The filler surfaces must flow into the plate surfaces without transition

Excessive wear damages the "cover" of the plasterboards. If fabric tape was used during the filling process, it must not be "sanded free". The same applies to fabric or mesh used on surfaces.

The optical indicator for the correct amount of material removal is a cloudy and wavy run of the lighter filled surfaces into the darker, mostly gray, plasterboard surface. When grinding, a fine dust cloud develops. The more "dusty" the cloud is, the better the sanding result will be.

Tips & Tricks

Do not wait too long after sanding with the sanding. Ideally, sanding takes place within 48 hours after filling. Every day, the putty hardens harder for up to two weeks and makes grinding difficult.
