Easy to install and weatherproof: wooden tiles on the balcony

Wood tiles for the balcony or the terrace usually consist of three to six parallel assembled wooden strips in square shape. There are open joints between the strips and the wooden tiles are simply placed on the floor with spacers made of plastic.

Click technique and last

The standard size of wooden tiles is thirty by thirty centimeters. The handy squares are held together by a plastic grid, which also act as a placement aid. Wooden tiles with these substructures are commercially available as click-wood tiles and have a leveling mechanism.

Wood tiles without click technology are mounted on cross-bearing slats and can also be laid very easily on a level surface. Disadvantage is the constant contact of the carrier slats with the temporarily moist substrate, which can lead to rotting. In addition, any necessary leveling must be carried out with relines of, for example, wood chips or other fillers.

The arrangement of the individual wooden strips of a wood tile can be oblique or straight. While bars arranged just to one side edge can easily be adjusted by the width of one bar, it is more difficult to cut along oblique bars.

Types of wood and container sizes

Suitable woods are cheap native woody plants such as acacia, pine, robinia or oak. More expensive, but also more durable, are tropical woods such as Bangkirai and Cumaru or the southern European cedar. The wood tiles should in any case belong to the durability classes one or two. Tropical woods from sustainable forestry carry the so-called FSC seal.

Wood tiles for the balcony are usually offered in solid pieces. Usual are four, nine or twelve individual tiles. Twelve square-shaped wooden tiles with a side dimension of thirty centimeters correspond to 1.08 square meters. Packages with twelve wooden tiles are available from twenty euros, high-quality tropical wood cost in this package size up to fifty euros.
