Everywhere you hear, we should drink as much as possible, and our organism needs water - but what exactly? What functions water has in the human body, and what tasks it actually fulfills, this article informs.

When talking about the water balance, confusion often arises. The idea that our body has a kind of "water reservoir" is not quite right. Rather, it is true that our body consists of more than 60 percent water - in an infant even more than 80 percent. Only the remainder remaining is actually solid tissue.

This body-building water is constantly consumed by a variety of metabolic processes:

  • Excretion (urine, but also through the intestine water is excreted)
  • sweat
  • Breathing (when breathing, not a small amount of water evaporates, even more at high altitudes)

Therefore, water must be regularly added to keep the water level in the organism as constant as possible. How much water has to be supplied depends on a large number of factors and can not be said to be general.

Functions of water in the human body

Water is the most important building material in our body - but it also fulfills a multitude of other tasks and functions in the human body.

temperature regulation

Our body temperature must be kept within a certain temperature range, ie around 37° C, under all circumstances. Heat is generated by the conversion of solid food ("internal combustion", therefore, food also has a calorific value, ie heat units).

In order to evenly distribute the resulting heat in the body, water is necessary. Excess heat, on the other hand, has to be dissipated - and that happens through sweating. Water is released through the sweat glands, the skin cools down through the sweat film and the surplus heat can escape.

Water is used in the body as an important means of transport for substances. For almost every aspect of our metabolism, transportation is crucial. If they do not work or do not work smoothly, serious problems quickly arise.

solvent

Water is not only the means of transport in the body, but also an important solvent for many substances. Only through water can certain substances be removed from tissues and transported away. This also applies to degradation products and toxins. If there is permanently too little water available in the body tissues, the body "slugs up".

Chemical reaction partner

Many chemical reactions inside our body only occur in the presence of water. In many cases, water provides the energy needed for chemical reactions.

Buffer for acids and alkalis

Water serves as an electrolytic buffer for acids and alkalis and thus regulates the pH inside the body. In the case of a lack of water, this buffering capacity is limited, and the organism then acidifies as a rule.

All these tasks can only be fulfilled by natural water. If chemically modified water (osmosis water, alkaline water or other "trend products") is added to the organism, the body chemistry changes because important properties of the water are missing.
