Entrance: What should be considered when draining?

In many cases, it is already required that you drain your driveway on your own property so as not to overload the sewers. How to make such a drainage and what to look for is explained in detail in this article.

Dewatering in the municipalities

Not every municipality requires drainage of the driveway, but in many municipalities this is the case.

The sense behind it is easy to recognize: If the driveway on the respective property is drained and the surface water (rainwater) does not reach the sewage system, an overload of the sewage system due to the many land entrances will be effectively avoided, especially in heavy rain.

Drainage in small areas

If a driveway has only a small area, the drainage is usually quite straightforward.

It can be "wild" - that is, uncontrolled - in a lawn on the side of the driveway or in a bed. The resulting amounts of water are also so low that hardly a great effort must be driven to let them percolate.

This is the case, for example

  • individual parking spaces in front of the garage
  • Carport parking spaces (the uncovered part)
  • small driveways to the house, which represent only a kind of "forecourt"

Drainage on larger areas

On the other hand, larger areas must normally be drained in a controlled manner. In the case of paving, it is quite easy to install so-called "line processes". At the end of the line sequence, for example, a trickle shaft is installed. The gradient for the gutters should be in the range of about 2%.

The costs for such a drainage system are manageable, plastic gutters cost around EUR 30 per running meter (including the seal.) A suitable gully can also be obtained quite inexpensively - generally from around EUR 40 - 60 per piece can also be more expensive, especially in stainless steel covers you have to consistently expect higher prices.

Of course, you can also pass the collected water to a cistern and continue to use it as gray water for toilet flushing or garden irrigation.

Tips & Tricks

Always make sure that the cover of the drainage channel is as anti-slip as possible. There is a high accident risk here. To reduce this risk, there are special, non-slip plastic covers, which are new in the market for several years.
