Epoxy resin - what alternative is there?

Epoxy resin has many advantages, but of course it has some drawbacks, so more and more do-it-yourselfers are looking for an alternative to epoxy resin. On the one hand there is a possibility of polyester resin, but in the meantime there is already epoxy resin, which is obtained biologically. Here are the respective advantages and disadvantages of the products.

Advantages and disadvantages of epoxy or polyester resin

Polyester resin is easier to process and mix than epoxy. The addition of the hardener is somewhat variable here. However, the polyester resin tends to be brittle when mixed too liberally.

  • Epoxy is considerably more expensive than polyester resin
  • Polyester blends better with fiberglass mats
  • Epoxy is less odor intensive
  • Polyester is far from being so impact-resistant
  • Epoxy shrinks less

Epoxy resin and organic are not mutually exclusive

Anyone who thinks epoxy resin would be the highest in the chemical industry and therefore refuses this practical substance can be wrong. Because the plastic, which is used even in the aerospace industry, is already partially made of linseed oil or other epoxidized vegetable oils.

Tips & Tricks

Even a 100 percent organic epoxy has already been produced. The hardener in this case is made from grape seed oil and the epoxide from linseed oil.
