Escape stairs - DIN standard and regulations

The DIN for necessary stairs shows various important data that must be taken into account in staircase construction. However, some provisions regulated by the DIN do not take into account the more extensive requirements laid down in the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations or the shop regulations. Here we show the important dimensions of the DIN for necessary stairs.

Necessary stairs

Escape stairs and fire stairs are generally referred to in the DIN as necessary stairs. While in DIN the smallest necessary stairway width is one meter, the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation only provides a width of 0.85 meters for the smallest escape staircase.

DIN 18065

Buildings generally require an escape staircase that is at least one meter wide. If additional stairs are installed, they must be at least half a meter wide. The ratio of step height and step depth can be calculated here as follows:

2 x step height + step depth = 59 to 65 centimeters

Thus, the standard is much more flexible than the actual stair formula, which is usually given by carpenters and craftsmen with a rigid 63 centimeters.

Dimensions of the stairs

In the case of stairs, DIN 18065 differentiates between general staircases and staircases in residential buildings. All residential buildings, with up to two apartments or stairs within apartments, only need to have an 80 centimeter wide staircase.

Tips & Tricks

Never forget the handrail in a private apartment, which is mandatory for every staircase. You should also comply with the width and height standards. If these are not adhered to, the value of the house for a sale is reduced very clearly.
