Synthetic leather crumbles, becomes brittle and flakes off

Unfortunately, there can be no other judgment of serious judgment, as the artificial leather that is crumbling, can not be saved. The surface is made of plastic containing plasticizer. These ingredients escape over time, causing the plastic to fall back to its original, board-like consistency. Sealing can delay the process.

Overcoat becomes hard over time

Synthetic leather consists of a, usually textile, backing layer onto which a cover layer of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyurethane (PU) is applied. These plastics are brute hard in the initial state. Moldability and elasticity are obtained by chemical softening agents. These substances escape more or less quickly over time and limit their shelf life and lifespan.

When a certain amount of plasticizer has escaped, the topcoat becomes brittle. The lower the tension of the surface, the sooner the artificial leather starts to crumble. This is a breaking of the hard top layer. Depending on the reference form and intensity of use of the elasticity, flaking may occur at the same time or in a short time.

Use as a substructure and seal

If flaking or crumbling has already begun, the cover of an imitation leather sofa can no longer be saved. Possible is a new cover, which is glued over the entire surface and covers the existing surfaces and uses as a support surface. This can be clever and with suitable materials to avoid the final dissolution of the sofa.

The care of the leatherette sofa can slow down the volatilization of the plasticizers. Special sealants cover the surface with an airtight film and prevent it from escaping for a period of time.

Individual break edges, which lead to frailting at the edges, can be fixed with artificial leather or adhesives. If the sofa is then only used with a throw over, the crumbling can be additionally delayed. After the beginning of the crumbling, future usage periods of more than one year are only possible in exceptional cases.
