Compact a foundation

When a foundation is created, it should also provide stability for as long as possible. Therefore, a foundation must be compacted. How to compact a foundation and what to pay attention to, you can find out here.

Different types of foundations

In principle, every ground-contacting construction project requires a foundation. The foundation removes load and wind loads, and the foundation ensures stability and a straight stand. The following three types of foundations are differentiated:

  • point foundation
  • strip foundation
  • slab foundation

Compressing the plate and strip foundation

In particular, the slab foundations as well as the strip foundations require that the high demands be met. This begins with the construction of the foundation. In addition, the foundation must be frost-proof.

Construction, frost protection and compacting the gravel layer

Therefore, for the foundation initially between 0.80 and 1.20 m is excavated. Then the sole is compacted. After compaction, the gravel or gravel layer comes into the foundation. The grain size is mostly 16/32 mm. The gravel bed must be compacted well.

Now follows either a seal (foil or bitumen membranes) and then a clean layer of lean concrete or first the lean concrete and then the seal. Only now comes the real foundation. In most cases, there is now a reinforcement from the foundation with mats. Only now is the concrete filled.

Fill in and compact concrete

After filling, the concrete must now be compacted. Compacting the concrete is also important because otherwise voids may form on the steel reinforcement. These are air bubbles that can lead to corrosion as the structural steel now comes into contact with oxygen. Only if the foundation is compacted accordingly, the required compressive and tensile load can be guaranteed.

Compacting with strip foundations with base plate

Incidentally, the procedure does not differ if instead of a slab foundation a strip foundation with base plate is produced. Seen from the outside, this also looks like a slab foundation, only that the concrete layer in the interior is less strong and also not necessarily frost-resistant. However, the strip foundation can be so well connected to the bottom plate via a Baustahlarmierung together.

Tips & Tricks

In addition to compacting the concrete or the foundation, concreting conditions are also crucial. It must not be too cold or too dry. In addition, the concrete is to be protected against strong sun as well as against direct rain. After that, the concrete still needs enough time to harden. As a rule of thumb you can plan for 28 days.
