The freezer drips - so you find out the causes

A dripping freezer compartment is an alarming indication of a malfunction on the unit. The cause of the drop may be a one-time interruption of the freezing process or a major technical defect. You can quickly make a first diagnosis.

Short term disturbance

When condensation leaks out of the freezer compartment, there was previously a malfunction in the freezer performance of the unit. A short-term power failure or a faulty fuse on the power box may be the cause of the formation of condensation. Even if the freezer compartment is left open too long, the defrosting process starts in the freezer compartment and small puddles of water form there. The water can drip from the compartment into the refrigerator below. Defrosting water also forms if the temperature is set incorrectly. These triggers are easy to detect and correct immediately.

Indications of malfunctions

  • Puddles in the freezer
  • re-icing shortly after defrosting
  • thick ice lumps on the frozen food
  • Softening of the frozen food
  • "Snow education"

Possible defects on the device

The dripping is caused by defrosting processes in the freezer compartment. You can be triggered by leaking door seals or insufficient closing of the compartment door. If the thermostat malfunctions, it will cause temperature fluctuations while it is defrosting again and again. Device faults are also triggered by a wrong device location. Heat sources such as heating and oven must not be in the immediate vicinity. If the distance between the back of the device and the wall is too narrow, the waste heat on the back can not escape freely.

Check with a coin

To test the reliable freezing performance of your freezer compartment, you can use a bowl of water and a coin. Place the filled water dish in the freezer. Wait for the water to freeze. Place the coin on the ice surface. Watch in the following days what happens to the coin. If the freezer fails, the coin in the tray will freeze or even sink all the way down. If it stays on top of the ice, the freezer will work perfectly.

Tips & Tricks

Technical errors should be repaired by a specialist. For newer devices, this is usually still in the warranty. Old appliances with a low energy efficiency rating are better replaced by an economical new appliance. Compare repair costs and acquisition costs and take into account the respective operating costs.
