From the mountains to the valleys - larch shingles on the roof

The roofing of a roof with larch shingles has its origin in the alpine area. At altitudes of over a thousand meters, the coniferous tree in dry, windy and unshaded surroundings has the best conditions for a long shelf life. Due to advanced processing methods, it has proven itself in lower layers.

Properties and editing

The production of larch shingles is done with woods from native forests, from Siberia and from Canada. Common to all is the reddish-brown color, a special hardness and a high proportion of resin. In the past as well as today, proper pre-storage and impregnation are crucial for durability.

Larch shingles are offered split or sawed, whereby the direction of the annual rings runs vertically from bottom to top. Split shingles are provided with a planer along with a tapered Abtrag, which in the jargon is also known as keilig cleaned.

The lower edge of the larch shingles are chamfered at a 45 degree angle and the overlapping wooden plates with the lower edge mounted inwards, which promotes water drainage and insensitivity to wind.

The following measures ensure a roof or facade covering with long durability and attractive appearance.

  • With a boiler pressure impregnation, which also uses salt, the shingle cover can be made more durable and resistant to decay.
  • The mounting of the larch shingles should be as "airy" as possible. Well ventilated structures help the wood to dry out again and again.

Tips & Tricks

An old and traditional method of permanently "impregnating" the larch shingles is the installation of a zinc sheet at the eaves. When it rains, it forms zinc oxide, which again and again impregnates the larch shingles when it runs down.
