Build gabion raised bed yourself - that's how it works

With gabions you can do a lot in the garden. Raised beds bordered by gabions have become an increasingly used design element in gardens in recent years. How to do something right, shows you our contribution.

Raised bed elements

The installation of a raised bed made of gabion elements is very simple. There are already finished elements in the trade. All you have to do is set up and fill it, the frame is ready.

Designs and prices

For raised bed elements, a few standard sizes have meanwhile become established. What these are and what finished gabion baskets in these sizes can cost in about, see the table below.

Size outsidePrice approx
100 cm x 50 cm x 50 cmabout 70 EUR
100 cm x 50 cm x 100 cmabout 100 EUR
120 cm x 30 cm x 30 cmabout 60 EUR
120 cm x 50 cm x 50 cmabout 90 EUR
130 cm x 80 cm x 80 cmabout 140 EUR
130 cm x 100 cm x 80 cmabout 170 EUR
200 cm x 100 cm x 100 cmabout 280 EUR - 500 EUR

The wall thickness is between 10 cm and 15 cm for most elements. You then have to calculate the costs for the filling extra. Natural stones are around 120 - 400 EUR per t. This is usually sufficient for 0.6 - 0.8 m³ filling volume of the gabion. But you can also choose cheaper alternatives: Bark mulch, for example, costs only about 50 EUR per m³ filling volume. What is possible, you will find in this article.

Create correctly

The creation of the raised bed is then no longer difficult. If the gabion elements are fixed and filled, you only need to cover the inside with fleece. You must not disguise the ground, it is best to set up a grid to prevent vole attacks.

Lay your bed as follows (from bottom to top):

  • Tree and shrub cut
  • Green waste (leaves, etc.)
  • dung
  • Compost soil mix
  • actual potting soil (as nutritious as possible)
