  • It can stand as an optical separating element between individual garden areas
  • she can define a raised bed

Procedure when walling

Depending on the selected bricks and selected wall type, the type of walls is different. Quarrystone walled up differently than bricks. Masonry must be grouted later, other masonry may be plastered under certain circumstances.

But the basic steps around are essentially always the same. Our guide will show you what is important and what steps are needed.

Note: If you set a drywall, the procedure is fundamentally different than with mortared masonry, the foundation of a drywall is usually built differently. Click on the links to find the corresponding instructions if you want to build a drywall.

Building Mortared Garden Wall - the basic steps

  • Gravel or gravel (for example 0/32, better infiltration without zero shares)
  • Concrete (sufficient load capacity, at least B25 / 30)
  • selected stone type
  • Masonry mortar (with natural stones: natural stone mortar)
  • Foundation waterproofing material (e.g., bituminous sheet, thick coating, etc.)
  • possibly jointing mortar (with exposed masonry, preferably without cement)
  • ev. Cleaning materials
  • ev. drainage material (always recommended for retaining walls)
  • spade
  • Vibrating plate (can be borrowed in hardware stores)
  • Trowel and trowel
  • Material for mixing concrete and mortar (tubs, whisk, etc.)
  • ev. Spirit level, plumb bob, guideline
  • possibly corrective
  • ev. Tool for plastering
  • possibly jointed iron

1. Lift foundation trench

A foundation for a garden wall must always be frost-free. First, lift a foundation trench 10 cm wider and longer than your planned wall. The foundation ditch should be around 80 cm deep.

2. Create a foundation

Compact the bottom of the foundation trench with the vibrating plate. Apply a layer of gravel for frost protection. The layer should be about 40 cm thick. Pour up individual layers and compact them with the vibrating plate before inserting the next layer. Then insert a layer of concrete about 30 cm high into the foundation.

3. Seal the foundation

Seal the foundation in a suitable way when the concrete has hardened.

4. Lay stones

Apply a layer of thick bed mortar to the seal. Lay the first stone row and carefully measure each stone and tap it straight. Always mortar butt joints. Wall the remaining stones with masonry mortar or natural stone mortar. For quarry stones, use stones as long as possible for the first row.

5. Seal the wall crown

In order to avoid weather damage, you must seal the wall crown with a suitable method. Click on the link to see what options are available..
