Garden wall: wall right

A garden wall can be built from a variety of materials: established in Germany, especially brick walls and natural stone walls. Of course, quite different, exotic variants are possible - but then masonry and mortar choice must be coordinated separately.

Therefore we show you in our article only the conventional wall in the thick bed mortar method out bricks, natural stones or Sandstone.

Foundation: firm stand for strong walls

Walls need a clean and stable ground. The best substrate for a stable wall is rightly a concrete foundation: First, concrete and cement-bound mortar form a strong bond, second, the building material has the necessary strength to support a stone wall.

The prerequisite for a good foundation is above all one careful examination of the ground: So should not be "built on sand", also possible under-flushing and soft earth can affect the stability of the foundation. An examination by a specialist can help here. This often recommends a ballast packing or drainage, which then provides stability.

Bricks: the agony of choice

A garden wall peacefully grazes the property and can serve as a climbing aid for plants, pick up garden tools and above all provide protection against sight and burglary. Once the garden wall is in place, you do not have to worry about it anymore. You have a job, but then you can enjoy the perfect privacy.

We will show you how to properly and appropriately build a garden wall and inform you comprehensively about outdoor walls.

Thick bed mortar method

Thick bed mortar method

The thick-bed mortar method is mainly characterized by the approximately 1.2 cm thick bearing joint. It is the connection between the rows of stones and compared to other methods, such. B. the Thin-bed mortar method, comparatively thick.

The advantage of this method is mainly the ability to make corrections in height and vertical alignment through the mortar can. The stones used need not be ground level for this process and are therefore cheaper. The disadvantage is a comparatively high mortar requirement.

Mix mortar

For inexperienced do-it-yourselfers, the use of so-called ready-mixed mortar is recommended: it is offered ready mixed in a sack and only has to be mixed with water in the quantity described on the container.

Mortar is best mixed with a mixing machine, alternatively, a sufficiently large tub can be used with a drill whisk. Make sure that the mixed mortar is lump-free and has a "heavy-tearing" consistency.

The finished mortar is filled into a transport vat, then the walls can be started. Then immediately water should be added to the mixing drum or the mixing tub, so that the mortar residues do not dry.

First wall row

First, carefully clean the surface of the wall, then use a thick pencil or chalk to record the length of the wall on the floor. If the wall is to run at an angle, the line must be adjusted accordingly.

Measure now with a level and a spirit level, whether in the course of the wall bumps are present. These must be leveled with mortar. Then the first layer of mortar is applied - the thickness varies depending on the nature of the substrate. On this first layer of mortar then a bitumen layer is placed; this seals the wall from moisture from the ground. A second layer of mortar is then applied to this bitumen layer.

Now the first stones are set: The alignment of the first stone row must be done with great care, if it should be crooked here, it hits the whole wall. Spirit level and angle measurement are therefore mandatory!

The wall is ready!

After the last stone and the application of the masonry crown (here also a concrete wall cover can be used) the wall is finished and now has to dry for one to two weeks. The wall may not be loaded during this time, also drilling and attaching objects is taboo.

After the drying time, the wall is fully loadable and stable. We hope you enjoy your new garden enclosure.

Wall Wall

After the first row is further walled: stone on stone, the wall is piled up stairs. Each individual stone you have to check it exactly to its orientation, here help Lot and spirit level on. At the corner, row by row, a wall string is attached, which facilitates the exact alignment of the stones.

When laying the wall string, you must pay attention to the following:

  • The upper longitudinal edge of the stone must be brought to about one millimeter to the string.
  • The upper longitudinal edge of the stone must be exactly parallel to the string.
  • The lower longitudinal edge of the stone must lie in one plane with the upper longitudinal edge of the underlying layer. There must be no "stairs".

The entire wall is later only in the Lot, if you exercise great care with each stone.
