Pump gasoline out of the tank

Again and again it happens that gasoline or diesel must be pumped out of a fuel tank. Depending on the vehicle, but also the given means, there are different ways to pump off the fuel.

When gasoline has to be pumped out of the tank

The combustion engines in automobiles are powered by diesel or gasoline. In order to drive a further distance, you always carry a sufficiently large amount of fuel in the fuel tank. Depending on the model and tank, the content for cars is between 60 and 100 liters. Now and again there are situations that the fuel must be drained from the tank:

  • fueled wrong type of fuel
  • short-term decommissioning with full or almost full tank
  • accident
  • Tank repair or replacement
  • Scraping a vehicle
  • Petrol is needed for the lawnmower

Possible techniques for draining the fuel

As many options exist to drain gasoline or diesel, there are as many options as you can do:

  • Hand vacuum pump with correspondingly long hose
  • Piston pump electric or manual with correspondingly long hose
  • over the tank drain plug
  • using the on-board fuel pump

Piston and vacuum pump

Whether it is a vacuum or piston pump (function), first the hose must be completely inserted into the tank. This is done via the tank lid. On the vacuum pump (often referred to as a siphon pump) is a bellows, which can be pressed together by hand, so pumped.

Above that, the fuel is sucked in first. Now, the other end of the hose must reach into a canister that is as low as possible than the tank. After the gasoline has been continuously pumped to the falling part and below the level of the tank or the fuel level in the tank, it runs on its own.

The piston pump

The piston pump is either as a large air pump with handle, which is pumped up and down or laterally in a semicircle back and forth (similar to a rotary pump). Gasoline can also be pumped out if the end of the hose is at a higher level than the tank contents.

Tank drain plug or fuel pump on the tank

In some cases, however, fuel tanks also have a drain plug at the bottom of the tank. Unscrew this, the fuel runs out. But beware - if the tank was very full, all the fuel comes very fast and with high pressure. In addition, the throughput speed can be increased by unscrewing the fuel cap so that the tank can aerate more quickly (otherwise a vacuum will be created by the deflated gasoline).

Gasoline pump on permanent plus

For technically familiar with automechanics people but also the company's own gasoline pump in question. This is usually located next to the tank outside. Disconnect the supply line in the engine compartment and extend it so that you can insert the hose into a collecting container.

So connect, that can be switched off at any time

Then set the power line of the fuel pump to permanent plus. But make sure that you can quickly disconnect the power connection, otherwise your vessel may overflow. In addition, you must avoid sparks when connecting the power line to petrol. Otherwise there is danger of explosion.

Tips & Tricks

Pump the gasoline really only with a suitable pump. Under no circumstances should you use the "method" of sucking gasoline through your mouth. Too big is the risk of getting fuel in your mouth. In addition, you can not avoid inhaling the toxic gasoline fumes when sucking.
