GRP is best glued with resin glue

Again and again, the task arises to connect glass fiber plastic (GRP) with each other or with other materials. As a construction adhesive resin adhesive come into consideration, which are in the same chemical environment as GRP itself. As an alternative, special adhesives are available which, depending on the task, are used in one- or two-component technology.

Kind relatives of the resin adhesive

When resin adhesives are used for bonding, they suitably match the material of GRP. According to the type of resin of the workpiece or component to be glued, the adhesive should be selected.

Both epoxy resin adhesive and polyester resin adhesive as well as polyurethane variants are commercially available. Acrylic adhesive completes the range of choice, the starting material GRP, chemically and physically similar adhesives.

An equally important role in laminating GRP or filling is the processing temperature. They influence the degree of liquefaction of the adhesive, the adhesiveness and the time of the processing capability, the so-called pot life.

How to glue GRP

  • Construction adhesive (selected according to material types involved)
  • Harder
  • Optionally, acceleration additive
  • spatula
  • dust brush
  • microfiber cloth
  • whisk
  • Respiratory and eye protection
  • gloves
  • Maybe hair dryer

1. Pruning

You must grind the splices on both sides in such a way that you get a slightly roughened surface.

2. Remove the grinding dust

Use a dust brush and / or microfibre cloth to clean the sanded splices. Do not touch the surfaces with your fingers to avoid skin fat deposits.

3. Mix the glue

Stir the appropriate amount of adhesive and hardener according to the manufacturer's instructions. Pay attention to the correct processing temperature, which should be around twenty degrees Celsius. If necessary, heat the adhesive, hardener and stirring bar evenly with a hair dryer.

4. Fill scores

Fill the ground grooves with a spatula or an adhesive brush. Liquify the adhesive by gently warming it with a hair dryer until it is evenly placed in the grooves and any other indentations.

5. Apply adhesive layer

If all wells are flush with the surface, apply the actual adhesive layer with the spatula according to the manufacturer's instructions. When coating, observe the pot life during which the glued parts must be joined together.

Tips & Tricks

If you are not sure whether you have reached the bottom and the corners of the can while stirring, you can safely transfer the adhesive mixed with hardener or accelerator into another vessel.
