Attach a grid to or in front of a wall

For two reasons in particular, a grid is needed on a wall. The construction attaches a gabion wall or is mounted as a climbing aid. Especially with gabions high stability is required. For trellises, grids are important that "understand" themselves with the self-climmers. Several construction methods are possible.

Pre-set or screwed on

A grid on the wall can either be mounted free-standing in front of a wall or anchored in several places in and with the wall. Not only the wall structure and the masonry have an influence on the construction, but also the characteristics of the planned self-climbers and vine plants or creepers. For gabions, a strong grid must be chosen with matching holding and resisting force to the single stone weights.

A welded grid can be placed in an inverted L-shape in front of a wall. At the bottom, it is anchored in front of the wall at the desired distance in the ground. Usually the types of foundations in the construction industry such as point or strip foundations are used. The upper end is attached to the wall or wall crown.

Directly in front of the wall, a lattice is bolted to the front of the wall with several supporting struts. Common are welded to the grid edges holding feet that have a screw on the wall end. For lattice trellis, four attachment points are sufficient per square meter.

Properties of a wall grid

To choose the right grid for a wall, the following properties must be evaluated and selected:

  • Horizontal and vertical mesh size
  • Strength of the bars
  • Texture of the grid (metal, plastic, wood, encased
  • Distance to the wall
  • Attachment points on the wall in number and type
  • Profile shape of the bars (round, flat, oval, angular)

Calculate load and pour anchor into concrete

For a gabion grid, the compressive force of the stones to be held later must be physically calculated. Welded steel grids with at least five millimeters bar diameter must be designed for several hundred kilos holding and carrying capacity per square meter.

When a wall or wall is rebuilt, the placement of the future grid is possible when shingling. Similar to internal reinforcements, wire mesh can be placed in the cavity. Individual retaining anchors are guided through holes in the formwork. They are poured during concrete pouring and form fixed grid fasteners in the wall.

Tips & Tricks

The distance between the grid and the wall should be such that, even with full growth or full stone filling, "airiness" will remain for the water drainage later on.
