Deleting trusses - what's the best way to do that?

Depending on how a half-timbered house is designed inside, there are different ways to paint it. Which colors are suitable for this, and what you have to pay attention to when painting in general, you will find in this article explained.

Possible interior designs

If the half-timbered house is a previously permanently inhabited house, the interior walls will usually be plastered. Only in a few half-timbered houses is the framework preserved internally in the natural state. Depending on that, you then have to find suitable materials and ways to make the walls of the interior.

Plastered interior wall

If you have never studied the plaster before, you should make sure that the type of plaster is actually suitable for the framework. As a rule, there are only three possibilities:

  • lime plaster
  • Kalkstrukturputz
  • clay plaster

If another type of plaster is found on the walls, it makes sense to remove this plaster immediately. Non-diffusion-open or cement-containing plasters are very harmful for timber and can cause massive destruction of the building fabric after a short time.

Paint lime plaster

The most suitable material for painting lime plaster is generally lime paint. It consists of the same material as the lime plaster - namely from quicklime. Lime Casein colors are also a good choice, they are even higher quality than ordinary lime paints.

The advantage is, among other things, that lime paint silicates with the entire surface of the plaster and thus is a homogeneous layer of the same material. This layer is very durable and stable due to the silicification.

In addition there is the high breathability and diffusibility of lime paint and lime plaster. This is enormously important for a half-timbered house, but is often not considered enough when renovating.

Further advantages of the lime paint:

  • Lime kills mold and generally does not provide it with a breeding ground, which is an important precaution in the framework
  • Lime is very slow to react, so stains can be easily removed
  • Lime can absorb large amounts of moisture and release it slowly, thus ensuring a very pleasant indoor climate with the same humidity level
  • Lime colors can simply be overcoated with new lime colors
  • Lime is completely UV-resistant
  • Lime usually does not age, so the surface remains intact for a long time

Paint clay plaster

To paint clay plaster, there are various possibilities. The most common are:

  • clay paints
  • Lehmstreichputze
  • Sumpfkalkfarben

It is advisable to use colors with a certain grain size to cover the often uneven clay plaster. If the clay plaster "sanded" you can prime it beforehand with Kalkkaseinfarbe. For painting you should then use again clay colors or limestone lime paints.

Painting of unpainted timber frame

Here, it is best to paint the areas with lime paint and the wooden beams with a thin, pigmented glaze. Make sure that the glaze is as thin as possible, and apply only a thin layer.

Tips & Tricks

An alternative to brushing clay plaster is simply to dye it. For dyeing, there are a small selection of colors in the trade - usually earth tones and pastel colors.
