Heating with electricity - there are these possibilities

Transforming electricity into heat is one way to heat rooms. In most cases this is a very easy option, as electricity is available in almost all locations. Depending on the type of heating, electricity is a more or less good source of energy for heating. Which heating technologies based on electricity there is, we have put together here clearly.

Direct heaters, storage heaters and radiant heaters

Depending on which physical effects are used, a power heater can be a direct heating, a storage heater or a radiant heater.

Direct heating systems generate heat and, as the name implies, deliver it directly to the room. Storage heaters also convert electricity into heat, but store it first and then gradually release it to the room, often over several devices.

Radiant heaters dissipate heat to the room in the form of heat waves or heat radiation rather than circulating and warming the room air. This is much more energy efficient.

The most popular direct heating systems include fan heaters. The current flow through a wound wire generates heat by the resistance which is then released to the room immediately via a blower.

Since the entire amount of air in a room must be heated, before subjectively a feeling of warmth, and the cooling air must be reheated again and again, fan heaters are among the least efficient forms of heating.

The power consumption of these heaters is enormous, as they have to constantly run at full power to keep the air warm.

storage heaters

The best known form of storage heating is the night storage heater. It charges cheap electricity from the power grid at night, converts it into heat and stores this heat. The next day, the heat is gradually released to the room.

The underlying technology is antiquated and less efficient, the power consumption (and thus the heating costs) is extremely high. In addition, there is hardly any cheap heating current today - but with household electricity, the costs are even higher.

As energy storage for otherwise lost wind power they should now be used again.

The well-known Ölradiator is incidentally a Mittelding between direct and storage heater. The oil in it is heated by electric current, but then the thermostat turns off until the oil has cooled down again. Nevertheless, these devices are not energy efficient.

radiant heating

The most well-known and for many years much praised form of radiant heating is the infrared heating. Unlike other forms of power heating, it works extremely efficiently, and is about 2.5 times more efficient than modern gas heating.

However, only dark spotlights for use in the home are really recommendable, quartz heaters and so-called "heat wave devices" of a different design are significantly less energy-efficient.

The other advantages of infrared heating:

  • It does not get all the air in the room, but only the solids in the room are heated
  • subjectively very pleasant feeling of warmth
  • the unheated air retains its moisture
  • there is no dust whirling up
  • Walls are heated and thereby dried, mold is prevented
