Water prices in many regions are rising or will rise

Why saving tap water makes sense anyway

It has long since become accepted that clean drinking water is the highest and most valuable asset on earth.

You do not have to take drinking water for all uses

Therefore, drinking water for use as plant water, toilet flushing or showering is just too valuable and indicates the excessive waste already. After all, who would buy expensive drinking water in the supermarket to use it for toilet flushing? Added to this is the problem that due to the steadily increasing population density in some regions (especially in the urban environment), groundwater levels are falling dramatically.

The rainwater cistern to collect rainwater as process water

Remedy here cisterns, so-called rainwater cisterns. In addition, there are also fountain cisterns (more under "Tips"). All rainwater that has previously been drained via the house roof and fed into the sewage or groundwater can thus be collected in underground cisterns and made available for consumption. Although this rainwater is not suitable as drinking water, but for excellent as process water. It even offers some advantages:

No lime increases the life of many machines

Therefore, rainwater downpipes must no longer be discharged into the canal in many new housing areas. But also in regions with oppressive or very slowly sinking groundwater floods can be avoided.

Cisterns and conveyor techniques

In order to be able to use the water from the rainwater cistern, you will get four different options in the hardware store or specialized trade:

  • submersible pump

Suction pump and domestic waterworks

The suction pump is only conditionally suitable. Because it always has to be switched on for water extraction. This is also the advantage of the domestic waterworks. The house waterworks include a pressure vessel in which water is stored. Thus, you always have water available to a minimum pressure for consumption. If the pressure in the boiler drops below, the pump switches on.

The domestic water machine is powerful for that. This ensures a constant high water pressure. So if you need a lot of water at a constant pressure, it is the better choice compared to the domestic waterworks. But then it must be ensured that the cistern is also designed to be large. Otherwise it might be emptied too fast.

The submersible pump for rainwater tanks rather unsuitable

Like the suction pump, the submersible pump works only when you tap water. The submersible pump is, as the name implies, in the cistern in the water. This may cause a problem with a rainwater cistern. Because many rainwater tanks are designed for floating water withdrawal.

Working principle of collecting water

The float ball in the cistern
