Horizontal barrier over injection - advantages, disadvantages, methods

If a subsequent introduction of a horizontal barrier layer is required, today is often set to the injection method. However, it is not always the best option and in some cases also has disadvantages. This guidebook provides information about what should be known about the individual methods and substances used, as well as about the advantages and disadvantages.

Everything about the injection method

  • How injection method works
  • Where injection method can have disadvantages
  • Which substances are used

How the injection method works

There are several approaches to the injection method. What they all have in common is that certain substances are "injected" into the masonry and provide a seal or stop the water transport in the capillaries.

For insertion, small holes must be drilled at very close intervals. If you work without pressure, these holes are drilled diagonally downwards.

Where the injection method can have disadvantages

Especially with strongly moistened walls, hydrophobic measures can only be effective because the water level in the capillaries is already so high that the sealant can no longer reach its point of action.

At high and very high degrees of moisture penetration, mechanical methods should be better used.

Another possibility, however, is pre-drying, as is the case with the use of paraffin oils anyway.

Here the boreholes are heated to 110° C. These serve special heating rods. Thus, the residual moisture dries out of the wall relatively quickly, then the sealant can then be introduced again and also reaches its place of action.

Which substances are used

Verkieselungsstoffe

In this well-known method of silicification alkali silicates are usually introduced under low pressure in the wells. The substances are corrosive and the effectiveness of the method is only a few years.

paraffin oils

Heated, liquid paraffin oils, which may also contain dissolved plastics, are injected into the wall to clog the pores of the masonry. As a result, no water transport can be done. Via colored injection substances, the degree of penetration can be determined by means of a test well.

Paraffin requires pre-drying of the building material

silicone emulsions

These substances make the inside of the building pores water-repellent and thus prevent the transport of water within the wall.

Tips & Tricks

Each injectate should have a valid WTA impact test certificate, indicating the degree to which it has been proven to be effective.
