How can you glue acrylic glass?

The processing of acrylic glass also involves gluing. You can work with different adhesives from the specialized trade, but also develop your own solution approaches. You will then learn which adhesives to use and how to achieve efficient results when gluing acrylic glass.

Glue acrylic, plexi and PMMA

Acrylic glass is a plastic. The technical name for this is polymethyl methacrylate, PMMA for short. Colloquially, acrylic glass is also known as Plexiglas. However, this is also the brand name for acrylic glass products of Evonik Röhm GmbH. Regardless of the name you use for acrylic glass, the bonding methods are all the same.

Consider before gluing

When gluing acrylic glass, it is first and foremost important what should primarily be achieved with gluing, but also the nature of the glued surface. Therefore you have to differentiate according to numerous factors:

  • Glue acrylic glass "invisible" with acrylic glass
  • Connect acrylic glass over a large area with acrylic gas
  • Glue acrylic glass with other (solvent-sensitive) plastics
  • Glue acrylic glass with other materials such as wood or metal

Requirements for the splice or glued seam

In accordance with the requirements and preconditions for the acrylic glass surface to be bonded, it must also be taken into account whether gluing that is not visible or extremely resilient is necessary. In addition, with PMMA adhesives, ie adhesives made of acrylic glass, you can also repair scratches and other deep damage in acrylic glass.

Repair scratches and damage caused by PMMA adhesive

For both techniques for repairing scratches and damage in the PMMA, you must first mill the acrylic glass. Slight scratches are milled out, deeper damages in the form of a V. As with other gluing of acrylic glass, you also have to cover the acrylic surface, which is not glued or repaired, with a suitable adhesive tape.

Now the adhesive is added in several layers in the milled groove until a bead forms. Make sure that no air bubbles are trapped in the adhesive. Suitable adhesive is, for example, PMMA with dichloromethane. However, the solution is fast volatile. After gluing, the acrylic glass component should be tempered to avoid stress cracks.

Stick large acrylic surfaces on acrylic glass

Even when gluing, for example, acrylic glass on acrylic glass, this adhesive can be used. To do this, also glue all surfaces that are not to be glued with a suitable adhesive tape. Under "Tips and Tricks" we explain to you which tapes are suitable and what else is to be considered. Then mark the surface to be glued with a marker and cut with a scalpel or cutter knife.

Glue, fix and remove excess glue

On this surface without foil, the glue is now applied cross-shaped and lush. Then the part to be glued is pressed into the glue. For better fixation, complain with a suitable object until the adhesive has hardened. This is the case if you can not press a nail tip into the surface. Now simply use a chisel to lift the excess adhesive and remove the velvet of the adhesive films on both workpieces.

Glue joints with acrylic adhesive

In the same way, you can also join acrylic sheets to a joint on an acrylic glass surface. To make the joint, you need a tensioner. So two wooden stands with joints, in which you can clamp collets in the desired distance. Besides, of course, collets. The acrylic glass bodies are now also masked again with a suitable adhesive tape and the subsequent adhesive surfaces carefully cut out.

Prepare the two acrylic components

Then, the acrylic glass body, which is to be glued only at a narrow edge by means of joint, fixed by means of the clamping device slightly above the other acrylic plate. In order to be able to determine the joint spacing evenly, construction paper can be folded to the required thickness and underlaid before fixing.

Pull adhesive bead

After fixing, it is simply pulled out. Now the adhesive is applied in the form of a bead along the joint (so that it touches both acrylic surfaces, which are at right angles to each other). The PMMA adhesive pulls independently into the joint. Again, you have to wait now, until the glue has hardened.

Make glue from PMMA yourself

In "Pouring acrylic glass" we described how you can pour liquid PMMA, but also how you can dilute it with a solvent yourself. In the right consistency (viscous, but still supple) you can paint the diluted acrylic and then glue two relatively large plates together. However, there is again a low risk of stress cracks, which is why the acrylic glass should also be tempered after gluing.

Tips & Tricks

Polyester tape can be used on most adhesives that you use to glue acrylic (PMMA) because it does not dissolve. If you are not sure, put some glue on a test piece of acrylic. After bonding, the tape must nevertheless be removed as quickly as possible, so that it can not come through reactions to a compound of both materials. Some PMMA adhesives tend to bubble. The specialized trade offers as laboratory equipment small vacuum bells, which use running water to create a vacuum. Such a bell can be used on small components to pull such bubbles out of the adhesive.
