What is the thickness of window glass?

It is often unclear what thickness window glass actually has, and whether there are any different thicknesses of window glass. A detailed answer to this question is given in this article, which effects the window glass thickness has on certain window properties.

Thickness of glass panes in single glazing

For windows with single glazing, as was common in the past, there is the greatest variation in the thickness of the glass panes overall.

Such windows may have glass sheets in thicknesses between 2 mm and 51 mm. Among other things, the high fluctuation range is explained by the fact that the disc alone has to apply the entire load capacity.

The larger the glass surface, the more resilient the disk must be. As a result, the pane thickness increases for windows with single glazing with increasing window size. The larger pane thickness also leads to better sound insulation, but also to a higher weight of the window.

Thickness of laminated glass

For laminated glass (laminated safety glass) the thickness can be up to 65 mm. The reason is that laminated glass usually consists of two glass panes (possibly more), which are firmly connected by a laminated plastic film. Very thick laminated glass with a very resistant film are also called bulletproof glass.

Thickness of double-glazed windows

Double-glazed windows typically have thicknesses between 22 and 42 mm.

They consist of two separate discs, which are firmly and airtight connected to each other at the edge of the disc. The filling between the panes is usually made of argon, a noble gas, in higher-quality soundproof windows also from other gases and gas mixtures.

The distance between the panes is also of great importance for the physical properties of the window, for its heat and sound insulation, as well as the edge bonding of the panes and its construction.

Three-pane insulating glass

Triple-glazed windows usually have window thicknesses of 27 or 32 mm, but there are different values for many windows.

Tips & Tricks

In addition to glass thickness, many other factors play a role in the properties of glazing. When buying the glass thickness is therefore of minor importance.
