If a hot water bottle has burst, it can have dire consequences

In most cases, a hot water bottle is filled with water at a temperature above the scalding limit of about fifty degrees Celsius. This is a risky commodity. Attention should accordingly be paid to the condition and, without exception, according to the motto "never in doubt".

High temperature and regular visual inspection

All manufacturers write the warning that no boiling water may be filled in a hot water bottle, from their products. If the bottles are too high, they can burst even at lower temperatures. When filling the hot water bottle, the water temperature should never exceed 65 degrees Celsius.

As a rule of thumb, the maximum fill up to half of the bottle contents can be considered safe. The material and the screw cap including spiral threads must be intact. For children, temperatures over forty degrees mean unnecessary risk.

Use, assessment and purchase criteria

  • A cover or a protective cover should always be removable. This not only allows continuous visual inspection of whether the bottle body is intact, but allows external washing.
  • Hot water bottles of rubber or rubbery plastic are usually "poured". The seams and potentially weakest material locations are located on the circumferential edges.
  • CE or TÜV as a quality seal are always an indication of minimum quality, which usually also refers to any existing solvents and plasticizers.
  • Never heat hot water bottles in the microwave, as the cooking of the water can be prevented, but other thermophysical effects can damage the material of the material.
  • With every improvised hot water bottle, the weakest link in the design determines the potential explosion location. As a rule, this is the lid, which can escape from the bottle like a bullet.

In everyday use, the placement of the hot water bottle can further reduce the health risk of leaking or bursting. The bottle must be placed under the body. Ideally, it is covered by towels or sheets, which absorb moisture in the event of a fall.

Tips & Tricks

If you are a suspicious person, as an alternative to the water heater you can also use gel heat pads or organic ingredients such as cherry seeds or cereal grains.
