If the house water system is leaking

Domestic waterworks are widespread and there are constantly more. Of course, this also increases the number of domestic waterworks that do not work properly. An almost classic malfunction: the domestic waterworks is leaking. In the following guide, you will find tips and information on what should be checked in the event of a leaking domestic waterworks.

More and more domestic waterworks...

A domestic waterworks offers numerous advantages. So it is not surprising that the domestic waterworks for gardening is as common for watering, as for the swimming pool or to provide drinking water. Above all, the pumping of groundwater or the provision of cistern water to the public water network represents a significant cost savings.

... also means a higher incidence of malfunction

Thus, it is not surprising that the number of domestic waterworks used is increasing continuously. But at the same time the malfunctions increase. This includes the leaking house waterworks. But before it goes to debugging, the error must first be narrowed down. The following aspects have to be considered:

  • Leakage immediately after the first installation
  • a leaking domestic waterworks after maintenance work (change filters, for example)
  • a sudden leak

Operation of the domestic waterworks

In order to better understand what can be the cause of a leaking house waterworks, first of all the construction of a domestic water plant, starting at the source of water (cistern, well):

  • Foot valve on the riser with sieve
  • riser
  • Filter (cartridge or sand filter system)
  • Connection to the water pump
  • from the water pump to the pressure vessel
  • from the pressure vessel via the supply line to the taps
  • possibly pressure reducer in the supply line

Domestic water supply in front of pump and pressure vessel leaking

If the system in front of the feed pump leaks, the domestic water works draws air. This can be a great risk, as cavitation can then occur on a centrifugal pump on the conveyor wheel. This is an air space on the impeller so that the pump is not sufficiently cooled or lubricated.

Not necessarily a leak

It does not necessarily have to be a leak. Also, the sieve at the foot valve may be at least partially blocked, but also the filter may need to be changed or backwashed in the sand filter. Likewise, however, a connection may also have become leaky - especially when cleaning or backwashing the filter.

Domestic waterwork after pump and pressure vessel leaking

However, if the system leaks after the domestic waterworks, ie in the distribution network, this can have consequences for the building structure if the pipes are laid in floors or walls. Even then, the leak must be rectified immediately.

Leakage of the pressure vessel

In addition to the leak in the system (before or after the domestic waterworks), the pressure vessel can be leaking. In the pressure vessel are two chambers or sacks (a gas and a water bag or corresponding chambers). Between both chambers is a membrane. In one chamber is air or gas (nitrogen, etc.), in the other, the water is stored.

Tips & Tricks

If now water is conveyed, the membrane expands in the direction of the air chamber. The pressure rises here now and is perceived by a pressure switch or pressure switch. Accordingly, the switching and cut-off pressure is controlled. Incidentally, the pressure can be adjusted at the house water works. The air chamber can be leaking. Then it has to be replaced (but this works only with high quality pressure boilers). Mostly the leak is on the membrane. This leak can be recognized because either the switching pressure has not been reached and is not reached or the pump no longer shuts off because the switch-off pressure can not be achieved.
