When the wooden stairs creak

The creaking and creaking of a wooden staircase radiates a certain charm for some people. Other residents with wooden stairs, however, are less enthusiastic about creaking and creaking stairs. The creaking can also have different causes. Below we describe how you can prevent creaking on new stairs or restorations, but also how you can deconstruct existing stairs.

Which floor can creak and creak

If wood surfaces are entered, this can trigger a creaking of the wood. This may affect, among others, the following soils:

  • wooden staircase
  • floorboards
  • parquet
  • laminate

What happens at the creaking of a wooden staircase

The cause of the creaking is basically always the same: wood rubs against each other. When you enter a wooden surface, the wood is loaded and gives back to any surface (even concrete bridges give way, so they are stored accordingly, only it is not so obvious here). You step on a hallway, on a step or a certain area of the parquet, you can hear this creaking.

Old or new wooden stair creaks - new wooden stairs

But you have to differentiate between a newly installed and an existing staircase. If the creaking of the stairs already occurs immediately after the completion of the component, this may indicate a design error. In addition, however, too thin wood as a construction material in question. Whether you can claim this damage depends on several factors.

The legislator to the creaking of wooden stairs

For example, the legislature originally dealt with it in DIN 18334 and, in an earlier version, said that creaking can be largely avoided. However, it was apparently not really sure.

Because in the latest version, the creaking of wooden stairs does not even go into detail. Thus, it is mainly in the field of building specifications or the content of the contract that you have agreed with the operating company.

It depends on the terms of the contract

But it can also be that the staircase manufacturer does not commit himself from the start and a creaking may be possible. After all, there are wooden staircase manufacturers offering concrete staircases without concrete.

So you have to research all these points exactly before you want to claim any damage. In addition, there is still bad news: new stairs, which were successfully complained of creaking noises can usually never be completely repaired.

New staircase begins to creak after a while

But it may also be that your wooden staircase begins to creak with a certain delay to complete the staircase. Then you should know exactly how the weather was at the time of construction and how it has been since the creak of the stairs.

If it was rainy or damp and in the meantime it is very dry, the wood may have contracted as it gives off moisture. Now the stairs are no longer exactly fitting and gaps are created - it starts to creak.

Building and wood moisture

This can have other, but similar causes. Actually, new buildings should be empty at least one winter as shell, so they can dry well. But more and more often, the construction work continues much too soon. In addition, the wood for your staircase was probably delivered days or weeks before the forthcoming staircase construction work, so that the wood can acclimatize.

If it gets drier over time in the apartment or house, of course, the wood gives off more moisture - so the creaking starts again. If you want to prevent this creaking, you should make sure during the installation of the stairs that the wood is as dry as possible and that the humidity is very low for days or weeks.

After all, if the wood expands later, there is less space between individual wooden components, as they are pressed together more intensively. You can therefore prevent the creaking if you wait for the right weather phases or the drying time of the shell for the installation of the stairs consistently.

An old wooden stair creaks

But if you already have an older wooden staircase and want to de-tune it, you have to proceed differently. Again, it should be noted that there is no really effective way to fix the cigars. However, you have the chance that the creaking can at least be contained. The most expensive option (even with new wooden stairs) would be the reworking of the individual pieces of wood, ie a removal of the joints.

Home remedies against a creaking and creaking

But this is very expensive and also the creaking must be reasonably contained and localized. A caulked wooden staircase has up to 300 such contact surfaces. In addition, you also have home remedies to choose from. But you also have to disassemble the stairs. You can buy felt at the hardware store, which conventionally comes under the feet of furniture.

Do not trust any tip or trick!

This felt is simply glued between the rubbing wood joints. In the past, talc powder was often scattered between the joints, but it is also of limited use. If there are bumps or elevations on the step that cause the creaking, some recommend rubbing a neutral oil such as salad oil daily at this area and then complaining.

This is to deform the wood back by the moisture that is now in the wood. However, we strongly advise against it because conventional oils are harmful to the wood.

Tips & Tricks

The best way to implement such measures is to renovate your old wooden staircase.
