Measure the humidity in gypsum plaster

Moisture measurements provide certainty about the condition of individual walls. The results can be reassuring or be the starting point for necessary renovation work. With modern measuring instruments, the measurement also succeed layman, if they are the necessary basic criteria known.

Preparing for a reliable measurement

The meter should be checked again for operability before use. It is best to familiarize yourself with the operation of the device in advance and to know how it is handled and used correctly.

Measurement basics you need to know:

  • Avoid measuring near pipes, pipes or nails. These parts in the wall can falsify the measured values.
  • Bear in mind that all electrically conductive elements make the measurement inaccurate. These include certain insulating materials and dissolved salts in the wall.
  • Before measuring, the measuring point must be thoroughly cleaned.

Dissolved salts can be recognized by salt crystal formations on the wall. They are easy to remove there. Pull nails and screws or dowels out with pliers. It becomes more difficult to find possible confounding factors that lie deeper in the wall.
For a realistic result, measure in several places on the wall. You can create a uniform grid and measure and document the individual points.

Proper use of the moisture meter

The meter should not be transported on the body. The body heat disturbs the device function. The measuring device should only be touched and worn on the rubberized parts of the device. Before the measurement, check if the printed circuit board is dry. Here, due to temperature fluctuations in different rooms condensation can form. After entering a new measuring range, you should always wait a few minutes until the device has adjusted to the ambient temperature.
The measuring device is placed perpendicular to the surface of the gypsum plaster. The gypsum plaster is soft enough to push the tips of the gauge a few millimeters deep. After the measurement, gently move the tips out of the plaster again. Ideal measuring points of the outer measuring ranges are about ten centimeters away from the corners.
