In the hallway, choose tiles or laminate flooring

In a corridor in the entrance area, coarse dirt infiltrations such as sand, pebbles and soil are to be expected. Often therefore smooth floor coverings are favored, which are easy to keep clean even with a broom. Aesthetic aspects influence the decision as well as financial considerations and functional properties.

Functional aspects

A floor covering in the corridor should have good care properties in addition to optical appeal and must be resilient. Tiles and laminate provide smooth surfaces. Depending on their abrasion class, they can withstand relatively high traffic without trace for a long time. Both floor coverings must, however, be called cold, sensuous as well as psychological. Functionality, however, is usually in the traffic hall corridor before the comfort.

care properties

Laminate has clear limitations when it comes to moisture and moisture. Moisty wiping and introduced outdoor wetness threaten the boards, whose base is made of pressed fibers. If the MDF and OSB layers are reached under the plastic-sealed surfaces of moisture and water, swelling, bursting and rotting pose a great risk. Professionally laid and grouted tiles are insensitive to moisture.

abrasion classes

Both tiles and laminate are divided into five abrasion classes. While the middle abrasion class three usually suffices for indoor planks and corridors without external access, at least products of classes four and better five should be selected for corridors in the entrance area. A decisive difference arises from the adjacent access room.

When a hallway is entered from a stairwell, for example, in an apartment building, the load is comparable to an internal hallway. In a hallway that connects at ground level and directly to a house entrance, it must be assumed that more extreme dirt entrainments of all kinds including wetness.


Tiles and laminate are prone to high impact sound development. This must be counteracted, especially in adjacent rooms under a hallway, with sound-reducing measures in the substructure. A ground floor corridor should at the same time be thermally insulated in the course of footfall sound insulation. The impact sound in the corridor itself can only be influenced by floor coverings such as mats or carpets.

installation height

The average construction height must be calculated for both types of flooring with at least twenty millimeters. For footfall sound insulation, a floating screed is strongly recommended. Underfloor heating increases the structure by at least ten millimeters.
