Working out scratches in the leather sofa

Especially smooth leather sofa are relatively resistant to scratches. Nevertheless, it makes sense to check immediately after the creation whether it is only an optical track or the surface is "scratched". Damage to structure and substance should be corrected immediately to prevent consequential damage.

Feel the damage

The covers on leather sofas tolerate, depending on the quality of the leather, also scratches. Exceptions are soft suede and aniline leather, where a scratch is almost always a crack. Sturdy smooth leather does not tear in normal mishaps such as sanding a garment button. Nevertheless, optical grinding marks are created.

It should always be checked immediately if the surface is mechanically affected. Swiping with your fingertips makes you feel whether there are bumps. This test should be done before working up a leather sofa at all locations that show discoloration and optical marks.

Optical appearance can be deceiving

The scratch depth is visually different when the leather of the sofa or couch is not colored. Then a color reduction or a contrast can act deeper than the scratch is actually.

Conversely, duch-dyed leathers can mask a large scratch depth. The haptic control is therefore always safer. The total thickness of the leather should not exceed half of the material thickness according to eye and feel. For deeper scratches a repair should be done like a hole or crack with liquid leather.
