Defrosting in the oven - this is how it works

Many swear by the defrost function of the microwave, but it is not particularly gentle on the food. There are several gentle variants to thaw meat and vegetables. One of them is the oven, which today even has a special defrosting function. But even without this function, you can use the oven to thaw.

Thaw different foods

Beans, peas and the like can be thawed in a heat-resistant bowl with water in the oven. These products thaw well in warm water and usually it does not matter if the vegetables are already cooking.

For meat and sausage, however, you should be very careful. It is even better to take a good piece of meat out of the freezer the day before and then thaw it well covered in the fridge. The slower the meat is thawed, the fresher it stays. Also, always use the oldest frozen piece you have in the freezer. To avoid frost damage and freezer burn.

Step by step thaw frozen food in the oven

  • baking paper
  • heat-resistant glass bowl

1. Protect food

Vegetables and ready meals are not so bad to be thawed in the oven. But meat should protect you in any case. Wrap it in baking paper and / or place it in a closed glass bowl, which should be as heat-resistant as possible.

2. Set the oven

Most recommend a temperature between 50 and 75 degrees for defrosting in the oven. Some ovens have an adjustable defrost function. You should select the setting according to the type of food. With meat, it is ideal to lower the temperature so that it is not already cooked and therefore tough.

3. Thaw and check

Recirculation is better than radiant heat from above and below. Especially meat you should turn together with the baking paper several times. You can also thaw vegetables in a glass bowl. If you do not have a glass bowl with a lid, you should also cover the food in the bowl with baking paper.

Tips & Tricks

The best solution for a good piece of meat, if you want to go fast, is always warm water. The meat is put in a good solid freezer bag and placed in warm water. The water should not be too warm, so that the meat is not cooked. The warm water has to be changed more often, so that the thawing proceeds quickly.
