Fill the holes in a wall

With the spatula, artificial function holes as well as damaged masonry are repaired. In principle, the closest possible material close the cavities is the goal. Cement mortar with suitable aggregates provides a wall-adapted backfilling. Absorbent walls require a primer.

Almost all fillers tend to shrink

When filling unwanted holes in a wall, mortar is used, which is adjusted to the wall material. For concrete and stone walls is usually a cement mortar. However, it tends to fade when drying. Through additives and compression this effect can be counteracted.

In contrast to surface filling, for example to compensate for joints, holes are sometimes filled up to a very deep level. If the hole is deeper than three centimeters, work on the walls should be done with compaction. Simply put, the filling material has to be "pressed in" several times.

To fill holes in a wall

  • Mortar or filler
  • water
  • Tiefengrund
  • Vacuum cleaner and soft dust brush
  • Mixing Cup
  • Spatula and / or trowel
  • float

1. Dusting

To prepare the wall to be filled, you must clear the holes of loose dirt such as debris and dust. The holes can be "swept out" with a cleaning brush. Alternatively, vacuuming the walls helps with a vacuum cleaner.

2. Priming

For holes with footprints of about five square centimeters you have to apply a deep ground. It prevents the filling material from shrinking too much when drying.

3. Mix filler

Stir the filler according to the manufacturer's instructions, such as mortar in a plaster cup. Choose a filler that matches the texture of your wall.

4. Fill holes

Brush the filling mass into the hole in table tennis ball sized quantities. If necessary, "stop". A teaspoon or a spoon serves well.

Smooth the wall

The still damp putty with a float off so that a slight vertical elevation "stops" remains. This "reserve" compensates for shrinkage during drying. When the putty has cured, level the wall by sanding.

6. Repaint the wall

Paint the wall. To facilitate even coverage, you can substitute a partial painting with a full coat of paint.

Tips & Tricks

To save work and color, you can perform only four stages of four passes through the entire surface.
