For all rooms and areas in the building there is a so-called standard heating load. This is the amount of heat that must be supplied to a room to reach a certain temperature. The standard heating load depends on many factors, but can be calculated according to a standardized procedure.

DIN 12831 contains the specified procedure for calculating the standard heating load of individual rooms. Due to the complexity of the calculation, the process can usually only be carried out by architects or civil engineers. However, the process often yields too high values, despite the complex calculation of building physics. But it can be used for individual rooms.

The calculation is easier after boiler full load hours, if the building has been inhabited for a while, sufficient data is available throughout. Even the calculation method according to Jagnow / Wolff provides reasonably reliable values ​​- but only for the entire house. Higher or lower standard heating loads in individual rooms can not be determined hereby.

Calorific values ​​for infrared heating

In principle, the standard measure of the dimensioning of the infrared heating in a room is the respective building physics calculated standard heating load. Depending on how many outer walls and windows are present in the room and how the dimensions of the room relate to each other, the standard heating load can be of different heights even with the same area.

Room size and demand zones

When planning, professional planners also differentiate between room size and special demand zones. In the simple case - for example in a bathroom - the room size is the same as the demand zone.

In some rooms, however, a balancing control between demand zones with very different heat losses may be necessary - or when a special comfort is desired (for example, if you are often behind the desk, and it would like to be particularly warm there).

Wall or ceiling heating?

Heating elements can be performed in the infrared heater either as a wall or ceiling elements. Ceiling elements are in some cases more advantageous if the heat rays would be too blocked with wall heaters.

Basically, as a rule of thumb for the full heating, it can be assumed that wall elements emit heat radiation up to a length of 5 meters to the front and 2.5 meters to the sides. For ceiling elements, you can go down from 3 meters and sides at 2.5 meters each.

Regarding the placement of the elements, there are a variety of rules: for example, wall elements should never be placed opposite windows, and possibly on interior walls. In the case of particularly cold exterior walls, however, the attachment must again take place close to the outside wall in order to avoid convection currents and high energy consumption. The complexity of the rules usually requires professional planning, since the corresponding wattages of the individual elements must also be calculated in relation to the standard heating load of the room.
