Fill joints at the wooden floor - step by step instructions

Many older wooden floors have very wide joints between the planks. It collects dirt and dust, which is not only a pain for allergy sufferers. Over time, the planks shrink and the joints may even become wider. But the hallway is on the floor, squeaks the wooden floor. Here you will find the instructions to fill the joints flexibly.

decorative strips

If the wooden floor is to receive a different decor at the same time, the joints can be filled in a contrasting color. However, you must then work very precisely. It is recommended in this case to mill out the joint so that it is uniformly wide everywhere.

Select method

If the joints are rather small, but spread over the entire floor, you can use a joint cement for wood, which is mixed with the sanding dust. So the joint putty has the same color as the wood and adapts perfectly. But for wider joints, this rather liquid variant is not suitable because it runs through and can even run under the wooden floor.

Fill joints in the wooden floor step by step

  • Joint filler liquid
  • Cartridge grout color coordinated
  • Wood varnish / wax / oil
  • caulking gun
  • grinding machine
  • Spatula different widths
  • Plastic scraper
  • screwdriver
  • Vacuum cleaner with crevice nozzle

1. Remove baseboards

The room must be completely empty before you start working. You should not proceed piece by piece, but always work the entire floor. To be able to grind to the edges, the baseboards must first be removed. These can be used later, so you should work carefully.

2. Sand the floor

Although you can sand the floor in a small room with an orbital sander or an orbital sander, this is usually done faster with a floor sander that you can borrow at the hardware store.

3. Fill joints

Always use a special product for the filling of joints. At first, silicone may work, but wood and silicone do not connect so well. There is also the grout for wood in many common wood colors, which makes the floor particularly harmonious.

With the caulking gun you press the joints with the mass to full. Always try to work one complete joint after another. Protruding grout should be removed immediately with a scraper.

4. Paint or grow the floor

If you want to re-paint or grow the floor after the drying time, you should pay attention to the compatibility of the product with the grout. It is therefore ideal if both products come from the same manufacturer.

Tips & Tricks

If, instead of the flexible joints, you prefer a seamless wooden floor, you can use wooden strips in the joints. However, this variant is much more complicated, since first the joints must be brought completely to the same width. Then wooden strips are inserted, which can be either in the same wood color or in a different shade as a contrast.

However, if you do not work cleanly or if there are strong temperature fluctuations in the room in question, the floor will probably squeak later.
