Descale the kettle with vinegar

Kettles are extremely prone to calcification. Of course, there are several ways to descale. Here, however, we want to explain to you why decalcifying the kettle with vinegar or vinegar essence is preferable.

Tap water and descaling

In more and more households today is a kettle. In Germany, the tap water has drinking water quality throughout. This is the reason that kettles are mainly filled with tap water. If you do not have a high-priced kettle with a limescale filter, decalcifying is one of the regular maintenance tasks around the kettle.

Frequency of descaling

How often the equipment has to be decalcified depends on the water quality at your location. On request, the waterworks will inform you of the hardness and the further composition of the tap water. To descale the kettle, you should not use a decalcifier from the market. This way, even with accurate rinsing of the kettle, you can avoid consuming aggressive chemical components.

Means for descaling the kettle

You should preferably resort to "natural" home remedies. These include, among others, the following means of descaling:

  • Vinegar and vinegar essence
  • citric acid
  • Baking soda and soda

Why citric acid is not so good for decalcifying

Baking soda and soda can be combined with vinegar. Mostly, however, vinegar, vinegar essence and citric acid are used. Citric acid is basically good for decalcifying, but brings a real disadvantage. The water mixed with the citric acid must never be heated.

The water for descaling must be cold, it must be lukewarm. Otherwise, there will be a chemical process on the calcium deposits. With warm water, the calcium deposits transform under the influence of citric acid to calcium citrate. Calcium citrate is virtually impossible to solve. For the same reason, citric acid should not be used on coffee machines or washing machines.

Descale the kettle with vinegar or vinegar essence

Basically, therefore, vinegar is always preferable. The effect is the same, except that the smell of vinegar can be a bit annoying. Essigessenz is used like vinegar, only that this must be diluted. On one part of vinegar essence, add four parts of water, ie a ratio of vinegar / water of 1: 4.

To descale the kettle

You can put the vinegar undiluted in the kettle. It is sufficient if the area around the heating element is completely immersed in vinegar. Now heat the vinegar and let it cool down. Allow the vinegar to work for about two hours. Then pour off the vinegar and rinse the kettle thoroughly. Before you boil water for tea or coffee with the appliance again, you should do two to three "idle runs", so boil water often without consuming it.

Tips & Tricks

With some kettles, the due date for decalcifying can actually announce itself. This is the case when the water takes longer and longer to reach the desired temperature. But even if the kettle whistles, this is often a sign that the device would have to be decalcified.
