Designing a key board yourself is a nice job that does not require too much effort in terms of material and time. At the same time, it is extremely convenient if you do not have to look for keys in all possible places. Especially when you are in a hurry.

In addition to keys, glasses are often searched for. That's why you get a guide here for a homemade key board with glasses garage.

The format is 30 x 80 cm and thus fits, for example, to a cabinet side. The format can of course be easily adapted to local conditions or to the number of existing keys and glasses.

To avoid scratches on the lenses and frames, felt is glued to the back of the cabinet. Instead of the wooden rods and hat gum, leather strap or rope can act as a holder for glasses.

Material requirements:

  • Cabinet back wall 80 x 30 cm
  • Last 20 x 28 mm
  • Beech stick 4 mm x 100 cm
  • Felt 24 x 74 cm
  • Drawer knobs (aging white pawns)
  • screw
  • wood filler
  • colour
  • Spray adhesive

Needed tools:

  • saw
  • Bench drill or drill stand
  • Scissors or craft knife

The color choice is as always a matter of taste. However, you should consider the self-designed key board, that the glasses and keys come to it and set visual and color accents.

Step 1: Saw strips to size

For the two long sides strips are shortened to 80 cm. For the short sides, two pieces are sawn off to a length of 24 cm.

Step 2: Drill holes for bars

In the insides of the two long strips 1 cm deep holes are drilled for the thin beech rods with a 4 mm drill. The position of the borehole is marked with a distance of 5 mm from the later upper side. In length you position the markings on centimeters 10, 35 and 50 from above. This creates enough space between the glasses.

Step 3: Screw strips on the back wall

Bars are now fastened with screw clamps on the back wall. There is some glue on the joints of the strips. The beech sticks (shortened to 25.8 cm) must be inserted into the holes.

Holes are pre-drilled from the back using a 2mm drill bit. Then screw your last and back wall together.

Step 4: Repair gaps and quirks

The already white pre-painted strips are repaired at the junctions with wooden putty. Likewise, any quirks in the wood are closed. Let the wood putty dry well(see instructions of the manufacturer on the tube).

Step 5: Drill holes for drawer knobs

The frame below is marked 4 cm from the left and right, 14 mm from the bottom for the key hooks. In between, at the same distance from below, a further mark is drawn every 4.4 cm.

Afterwards 6 holes are drilled from top to bottom with a 3 mm drill. The key hooks are once briefly mounted to the sample, thereby also the remaining fragments are pushed out of the holes.

Step 6: Overpaint the frame

Since the thin beech wood sticks should remain unpainted, you stick them to the edges of the frame from behind. The key hooks are unscrewed again. Now paint the frame and let it dry. Then remove the adhesive strips again.

Step 8: Assemble the drawer knobs and hang up the key board

Install two holes in the frame at the back (about 1 cm deep from bottom to top) where you can hang the key board.

Then screw the drawer knobs into the pre-drilled holes and hang them up.

Hang glasses and keys and enjoy your homemade key board.
