Glass kitchen splashbacks are extremely popular. Thanks to the numerous possibilities offered by LED technology, more and more people are interested in a kitchen back wall with LED lighting. Everything you need to know to build a kitchen back wall with LED yourself can be found here.

Different ways to illuminate the glass back wall

How you can attach a kitchen back wall made of glass, we have described here in detail for you. In this article, the self-build a glass kitchen back wall is not about how to mount the kitchen back wall made of glass.

Here, the focus is on LED lighting, despite the versatility of LED technology, not everything is easy to implement. Before that, it has to be clarified how the glass of the kitchen back wall should be illuminated:

  • flat and homogeneous from behind
  • at the edges from bottom to top and vice versa, possibly also laterally

Acrylic glass versus ESG

First, it's about what material you use for your kitchen back wall. With regard to glass, acrylic glass (Plexiglas) and safety glass (ESG, toughened safety glass) are available. The linked guidebook shows when you should not use acrylic glass better.

Illuminate kitchen back wall made of glass from the edges

The simplest way is to light the glass of the kitchen back wall from the edges. For this you need LED rails in the length of the glass. However, this is not possible with every attachment variant. You can only use point fasteners or spacers here if the glass is to be illuminated from above and from below.

It is optimal if the glass is then glued to the back of the wall. The disadvantage is possibly also the advantage, because the illumination is a matter of taste. Of course, the glass edges shine more intensely than the entire glass surface. E practically creates a diffused frame of bright light, which decreases toward the center of the glass. This effect may well be wanted.

Fully illuminate the kitchen rear wall with LEDs

The full-surface lighting of the glass back wall is not really expensive, but more expensive. First, it should not be clear glass. Milk glass scatters the light best. The problem with many LED panels is the fact that while they promise to evenly diffuse light evenly across the board, in practice this often looks quite different. There are then real hotspots to see.

There are some vendors who have developed special panels. These actually light up the glass evenly. But you can also use high-quality LED rails in the height of the glass rear wall. It is important that they scatter the light as much as possible. This is just the case with really high-quality LED rails - and they have their price. Depending on how bright it should be, you must calculate every 50 cm with a rail.

Mounting of the rear wall with flat LED lighting

In addition, it should be noted that the glass must not be glued. Rather, a system with rail profiles is preferable here. This also facilitates the maintenance of the LED rails, since the glass plates can simply be pushed out or moved laterally.
