Sand a tack-free gelcoat

The sanding of gelcoat can be done as a final operation that goes into polishing. When grinding as a preparatory work for the repair and a new order of gelcoat or topcoat, some basics must be taken into account to ensure an optimal basis for the renewal.

Remove stickiness by removing air

One of the most hindering properties of gelcoat or topcoat is the stickiness of the surface, which adds all the abrasives very quickly. The stickiness is to be eliminated by exclusion of air. Plastic films are laid on the points to be ground and sealed airtight at the edges with adhesive tape. After two to three days, the stickiness has disappeared.

Gelcoat should be processed at an average grinding speed of one thousand revolutions per minute. For the first cut a 2000 grit is recommended, which follows a 3000 grit. The sanding pad must be slowly guided in a circular motion over the gelcoat.
