Larch wood cladding - you must pay attention

Larch wood is a very good choice for the cladding of a building or building part. What costs can arise for such cladding, what advantages larch wood offers, and how to best handle the graying of the wood, can be found here.

Building a shuttering

Basically, a shuttering consists only of a substructure with square timbers, on which then facade boards are attached. In individual cases (for example, with a shuttering over the insulation) further elements may be necessary - this must be assessed on site.

Advantages of larch wood

Especially for wood facade construction larch wood offers quite a few important advantages:

  • Larch wood is relatively firm and tough
  • it is inherently weatherproof and resistant to pests (insects and fungi)
  • it is durable and also resists chemicals well (air pollution!)
  • It does not need any treatment but it can also be completely natural
  • The natural graying of the wood creates a very own charming look
  • Compared to tropical timber no long transport routes, therefore favorable CO? balance
  • relatively inexpensive compared to its durability and durability
  • no danger of massive illegal impacts on tropical timber (massive deforestation in tropical countries and consequent damage to the climate)

Due to the many advantages offered by larch wood, 2012 Larch was even voted "Tree of the Year".

Especially high quality species

Larch wood from alpine sites often has even greater hardness and durability than "lowland larches". In addition, the Siberian larch and the Canadian larch are also very popular in the field of exterior cladding.

Cost of a shuttering

Especially when using larch wood, the cost of a shuttering is also lower than many other types of wood. Untreated, the shuttering boards can generally be expected to cost around EUR 10 per m², but treated facade boards or façade profiles are usually already more expensive (around EUR 15-20 per m²). Depending on the selected thickness, the scantlings for the substructure range between around 2.50 to 10 EUR per meter.

Tips & Tricks

In order to achieve a uniform graying of the facade larch wood can be treated in advance with special oil stains. As a result, color differences, which inevitably arise in natural graying avoided. These oil stains are usually obtained under the product name "Weather Stain".
