LED spots: What are the problems of heat development in practice?

Again and again there is the fear of LED recessed downlights that the heat generation could be a problem. How it actually looks in practice and what to look for, read here.

Heat development at LED spots

Unlike halogen recessed spotlights, the heat development in LED luminaires can be very well compensated by the so-called heat sink. Although LEDs are also very hot, but to a lesser extent to the outside as halogen spots that have a very high heat output due to the function.

Temperature development with LED lights

Even the highly efficient LED luminaire still does not convert most of the absorbed energy into light, but into heat (around 80%). But that's a lot more efficient than the good old light bulb, which has turned almost 95% of its energy into waste heat.

The heat can be easily calculated physically. The semiconductor generates temperatures of around 4.5 watts per cm². In comparison, a stovetop generates heat of around 5 watts per cm².

For this reason, a cooling of LED lights is mandatory. Otherwise, they would only glow for a few seconds before they melt at several hundred degrees.

Who plans to install LED spots in places where sufficient heat dissipation is not guaranteed, who can use LED lamps according to powerful cooling.

It must be avoided that the temperature-sensitive semiconductors reach 120° C or more temperature. Then the life of the LED light is in acute danger. Under certain circumstances, the cooling must work so well that these temperatures are far from being reached if you want to operate the lamp for longer than a few months.

Cooling takes place via special heat sinks, which transfer the waste heat to the environment. Here lies the important point: The release of waste heat must not be hindered by the installation location, otherwise the LED lights heat up too much and are broken.

Tips & Tricks

The latest developments are liquid-cooled LEDs, where the waste heat is dissipated via mineral oils. Such LEDs are still not widely used, but because of their fairly simple design also very robust and durable.
