Dye bulb - is that possible?

Again and again it happens that one is not satisfied with the color of the light bulb. What options there are to color a bulb or to change in their color, and which alternative is much better, read this post.

Paint bulbs

Basically you can paint a light bulb. However, since high temperatures are produced at the top of the bulb, special bulb coatings are required.

The painting works basically

  • with all usual Light bulbs (not with LED or energy-saving bulbs!)
  • with all light bulbs (maximum 60 watts)
  • with incandescent lamps of conventional technology (none Halogen lamps!)

Incandescent paints are used as dip paints, which means that the light bulb is simply dipped into the paint, which then sticks to the surface. For this to work, however, the surface of the light bulb must first be degreased well (for example, alcohol or nitro dilution is suitable).

The prices for dipping paints are between approximately 10 EUR and 25 EUR per 100 ml, depending upon manufacturer and pack size.

Alternatives to painting

Dyed lamps

It is much easier to paint than conventional bulbs to buy ready-colored bulbs. They are available in a wide range of colors in the trade, they are priced in many cases, probably even cheaper than the self-paint would cost.

Another advantage is that since the bulb ban in the EU at the end of 2012, only energy-saving lamps are commercially available. This means significant advantages in terms of life and power consumption compared to the classic light bulb.

LED lights with adjustable color

Thanks to the LED technology, it is even possible to adjust the color of light bulbs. Corresponding pears are available from around 10 EUR in the trade. The desired color can be easily adjusted with an enclosed remote control. Many of these lamps are additionally dimmable.

Tips & Tricks

Incandescent lamps are by no means suitable for LED or energy-saving lamps. They must not be used on bulbs of this type.
