Lightweight construction wall - the material

The drywall is today in interior design standard. Accordingly, there is the right material for all areas and situations. Not easy, here to keep track, if you are not directly from the subject. Everything that you need to know about the material for a lightweight wall is summarized here for you.

First of all, define the basic requirements such as environment

In principle, the construction of a drywall is not very complicated. However, the material must be really well matched. Also on the situation or the area where the drywall is to be set up. Construction of drywall or lightweight walls

The construction of a lightweight or drywall looks like this:

  • Stud frame (substructure made of wood or metal)
  • Planking (lightweight boards or drywall such as plasterboard or EPS)
  • possibly electrical and sanitary installation in the lightweight wall
  • Insulation in the lightweight wall (sound, heat)

The right profiles in the right strength

The right drywall panels

Conventionally, plates with a thickness of 12.5 or 20 mm are used. The 12.5 mm panels are usually double planked, or just a layer of drywall panels with 20 mm thickness. The standard thickness of the profiles is 0.6 mm.

Particular attention where the requirements are higher

Wherever high stress is expected, for example at door openings, the thickness of the profiles should be at least 1 mm. Better still would be 2 mm, because then heavy door leaves that dam even better sound, can be hung.

Distance of the stud profiles

The distance of the stands with a standard planking is 67.5 cm. This corresponds exactly to half the width of a conventional drywall. This ensures that the lightweight panels and drywall panels with three rows (outside and center) are screwed. If you deviate in all dimensions, it also changes the fundamental characteristics of a lightweight wall!

Tips & Tricks

It happens again and again that the distance of the uprights must be changed or a thinner planking is provided. Please keep in mind that this has a significant influence especially on the load capacity of a lightweight wall. A standard wall can hold 30 kg per running meter. Heavy kitchen cabinets from / to 60 kg per running meter already require an additional crossbeam.
