Kalkgipsputz can wear mold, moldy but not

Gypsum combines many similar properties with lime. One crucial difference, however, is the alkalinity. Unlike the lime, the mineral lime itself can not mold, but act as a carrier. While lime "destroys" the spores with a chemical reaction, gypsum always has to dry completely and reliably.

Gypsum is a cheap extender

As one of the oldest masonry and plastering materials, pure lime plaster is being replaced by calcified plaster in many new buildings and refurbishments. Usually this is easily possible and the differences in the interior plaster hardly recognizable.

Generally, however, craftsmen and professionals predominantly find that lime or predominantly lime-containing plasters generate a higher quality of interior plaster. The main reason for the addition of gypsum is the cost savings and the ease of processing.

Risk factors for mold

The alkaline lime forms a deadly trap for mold spores. The same applies to pollutants in the room air, which are bound by lime and neutralized. These properties are missing plaster. Therefore, pure gypsum plaster carries mold and is not suitable in the bathroom and other wet rooms.

Gypsum and gypsum plaster are not suitable as a material for interior plaster if:

  • Regular heavy moisture development occurs
  • The masonry has efflorescence or traces of moisture
  • The ventilation situation of the room is poor or absent
  • Allergic and pollutant sensitive living in the household

Plaster provides mold runway

To be able to use, for example, the special smoothness of plaster wall plaster, the lime content can be lowered. Kalkgipsputz can play off its mold-preventing property from about eighty percent lime content. Between seventy and eighty percent and with regular complete drying

In "normal" areas of life and rooms gypsum plaster can easily handle moisture. The volume of moisture absorbed and released by the capillary structures is similar to that of lime. If building-related moisture nests such as condensation occur, should be dispensed Kalkgipsputz. Typical situations can be found in the basement and on external walls to the so-called "weather side".
