Lime plaster has properties that improve the indoor climate

Pure lime plaster is one of the oldest construction and building materials of humanity. Burnt limestone is burned from raw lime, which becomes slaked lime by subsequent addition of water. The most important properties of the plaster, also known as white-lime hydrate, include its high capillarity and moisture absorption capacity.

Many advantages and some disadvantages

When deciding which interior plaster is best, the type of use and the desired effect on the room climate must be considered. Differences are additionally between surface plaster and flush.

As interior plaster material almost all types of wall plaster can be applied to almost all surfaces. The following advantages of lime plaster can be used:

  • High capillarity with fine pores high moisture absorption volume (sponge effect)
  • Strong diffusion throughput (picking up and releasing water)
  • Prevent mold from rapid re-drying and alkalinity
  • To be used as smooth and rough plaster
  • Medium sensitivity to high humidity
  • Can be mixed and used as a light plaster
  • Binds organic pollutants out of the room air

When assessing and choosing the interior wall plaster, the following disadvantageous properties must also be taken into account:

  • For wet rooms and exterior plaster too "water-friendly" and sensitive
  • Among the plaster species the most expensive variant
  • Processing by high alkalinity without skin contact required

Lime plaster with plaster and cement stretch

As alternatives to pure lime plaster other and partly similar plasters can be chosen, which differ in their properties. Kalkgipsputz is frugal with respect to the masonry and is often used as a flush. On the surface it has a greater sensitivity to moisture.

In the choice between Kalkgipsputz or lime cement plaster, the load is crucial. In outdoor areas and in wet areas cement-enriched plaster is more advantageous. Pure lime plasters and lime plasters, which are even more extended with gypsum, depending on the mixture and additives, are suitable for the diffusibility and sensitivity of loam plaster.

Tips & Tricks

Never underestimate its alkaline effect when mixing and processing lime plaster. Crushed lime "burns" into the skin and lime dust can severely damage your eyes, which can lead to loss of vision. Only use with respiratory and eye protection, long-sleeved clothing and protective gloves.
