Lime plaster with or without preparation paper

The very different ways in which the surface of lime plaster can be designed, ranging from Einkleistern and wallpapering to filling or even new plastering. Interior plasters usually provide sufficiently smooth texture, but a scratch, rough or textured plaster can not be wallpapered without good preparation.

Evaluate flatness and smoothness with a simple test

If it is a common and normal fine plaster for interior, most wallpapers are easily applied to lime plaster. A smooth lime plaster on interior walls is usually felted. As a rule of thumb, grits of the plaster, which do not exceed one millimeter of grain size (0/1), are considered as smooth interior fine plaster.

A Wandrauputz has larger grain sizes. Even a fine plaster can be applied with a structure. With two simple tests, the direct wallpapering ability can be determined:

1. Using the back of the hand and applying light pressure, paint about half a meter over the plaster. If the skin shows abrasions, it can not be wallpapered without preparation.

2. Direct a lamp or a spotlight from four directions onto the structure gradients. The shadow may not exceed the three-dimensional height of the course in any direction.

Fill in or apply new topcoat

If the plaster does not provide the necessary smoothness on the surface, a new application of a finishing coat or a smoothing filler is preferable to sanding or even removal.

In principle, the bumps must be filled, which is relatively easily feasible by troweling the interior plaster, for example, with lime slurry or lime. This order can also reduce the grittiness of the lime plaster, which carries the risk of being unable to hold the wallpaper paste partially.

Fitness of wallpaper style

Diffusion-open wallpaper made of paper and textile receive the specific advantages of lime plaster. Plastics and nonwovens seal the plaster and thus its diffusing effect.

Heavy wallpapers need a stronger paste, which is usually only achieved by contained solvents. Water-soluble and vapor-permeable pastes can be applied in several passes on the plaster to increase the adhesive effect.

Tips & Tricks

Make sure that your lime plaster has dried through before you paper it. If you wallpaper too early, you can mess up the "water balance" of your plaster, which can lead to damage until it is replaced.
