Kalkstreichputz - many advantages for living spaces

If you are looking for an ecological and healthy living space, and if you want to save yourself expensive craftsmanship, you are well advised to use a lime-based plaster. Lime mortar and lime plaster

The technical terminology in the DIN called plasters not as plasters, but usually as a mortar. Different DIN standards divide the individual plaster types into different groups.

Lime mortar (ie lime plasters) are taken into account in DIN 18550. There, all "pure" lime plasters, which consist of hydrated lime or hydraulic lime, form the group P1. This group can then be divided according to the composition, namely in

  • Air-lime mortar, (1 a)
  • Water lime mortar (1 b)
  • hydraulic lime mortar (1 c)

Lime mortars can also be mixed with cement, but the lime-cement plasters then form a separate group with distinctly different properties.

String plasters

Thin layers of plaster (up to around 1 mm) can also be applied by rolling up (rolling plaster) or by brushing with the tassel (brushing plaster), instead of rubbing it up as usual. The grain of such plasters is usually around 0.5 mm, so they are no longer frictional.

Most lime-based coating plasters have a very simple composition. Mostly lime lime is used. This is a slurry of slaked lime (Ca (OH) 2) with water. Unlike quicklime (CaO), lime lime is not corrosive.

Composition mostly of pure natural materials

Unlike cementitious plasters, limestone plasters often consist of only a few, and usually almost entirely natural substances. Main constituent, as already mentioned, is lime limestone, frequently the following substances are found as admixture:

  • chalk dust
  • limestone
  • linseed oil
  • cellulose

All of these natural ingredients also ensure good living health without chemical exposure to harmful exhaling substances (such as with synthetic resin plaster).

Easy to apply yourself

Painting or rolling plaster designed for this purpose is no more difficult than painting a wall. Most plasters can be processed just as easily as wall paint. By doing it yourself you save a lot of money compared to professional plastering (which you really have to master).

Because of the low layer thickness of the plaster, however, roll and brush plaster is only suitable as a top coat.

No moisture load

Especially in dry construction, but also on other occasions, the building moisture is always a problem. Moist plasters bring a lot of moisture into the building - with roll and brushing this moisture is significantly lower (also because of the lower layer thickness). This can often be an advantage, especially where you want to avoid high humidity and long dry times.

Good moisture regulation

Lime has a high moisture absorption capacity. Rooms, which are plastered with lime plaster, can absorb and store a high amount of humidity and then slowly release it again. They effectively compensate for a damp room climate and provide comfort.


Lime plasters are strongly alkaline and thus unsuitable as a breeding ground for mold. Mold dies very fast on them because of the pH. This can - especially in our more and more moisture-laden and thus mold-endangered, airtight interiors - an effective prevention against mold.

Interesting look

The light falling on a wall covered with plaster is not directly reflected but only broken several times. Responsible for this are the lime crystals, which interlock with each other on the surface of the plaster. This ensures a very lively and warm look (unlike with synthetic resin plaster, for example). The stroking then reinforces the effect and creates interesting structures.

Good eco-balance

Cement generally does not have a very good eco-balance, and global cement production is a very high CO? Cause. Lime plasters, however, are almost CO? -Neutral (except for the energy production during firing, which is very low). In addition, lime plasters are generally a very healthy and ecologically balanced building material.

Tips & Tricks

The exact composition of the lime plaster is fully specified only for declared natural products. Only natural producers have voluntarily imposed a full declaration of ingredients. In other Kalkstreichputzen occasionally unnamed ingredients may be present, but these are usually present in very small quantities and usually harmless.
