The larger the area of ​​an acrylic plate, the more unstable and yielding it becomes.

Double-wall sheets have different properties from single sheets

Of course, this was also noticed in the manufacturing industry, and so it came to the idea of ​​double-wall sheets made of PMMA. These are two plates that are connected to each other with webs. This leads to the formation of chambers in the plates. This is accompanied by completely new properties that simple panels with large dimensions can not show:

Important in connection with the area size of double-skin sheets are likely to be the values ​​and dimensions with regard to light transmittance, load capacity and thermal insulation. With all these values, the plate sizes, the thickness of the plates, the dimensioning of the bars and their distance between them play an important role. This makes it difficult at first to recommend flat double-wall sheets with specific dimensions for various applications.


This does not mean that you can or should neglect these values. If the data is not apparent from a product data sheet, you should definitely ask the salesperson or plate manufacturer. Of course, hollow panels can be cut, but due to the webs here are some limits. If you want to install double-skin sheets, you must also remember that not every product may be drilled.

The thermal insulation of double-skin sheets

In a simple roofing, it probably plays a minor role, but for example, in the construction of a greenhouse with double-skin sheets or a corresponding roof, the thermal insulation is quite relevant. The heat transfer coefficient "U" is explicitly dependent on the thickness of the panels and the size of the chambers for double-wall sheets. Therefore, many U-value or old K-value is given for many double-skin sheets.

Tips & Tricks

In particular, as a roof (balcony, terrace) and the resistance to hailstorm is of importance. Different manufacturers sometimes make very different statements that in no way correspond to 100% hail protection. A stronger double-wall plate does not necessarily have to be the better choice. The thinner the plate, the more elastic it becomes, that is, it may give in on hail.
