Maintenance and care of an awning

Awnings have been in the trend for many years, but also expensive to buy. They will last a lifetime, provided they are properly cared for and maintained. Everything you should know about the care and maintenance of your awning is summarized below.

Awnings are popular, but there are always maintenance backlogs

Awnings have always been extremely popular. They are large shade donors and provide privacy. Thanks to modern technology, awnings as rain protection are even possible today. In addition, even relatively old models can be improved by, for example, retrofitting an awning motor. However, maintenance is often neglected or improperly maintained.

Advantages of awnings

Awnings, among other things, provide the following advantages at the following locations:

  • Terraces and balconies
  • shops
  • Campers and sales vehicles
  • garden shed

Basic care and maintenance of awnings

The care and maintenance requirement for an awning is relatively extensive, but also depends heavily on the equipment:

  • Clean the awning (annually)
  • Impregnate awning (if required)
  • Care and Maintenance

Cleaning the awning

The awnings are thus exposed to the weather conditions all year round. Therefore it should be a matter of course to clean awnings at least once a year. It offers itself almost as a spring cleaning to bring the awning after the end of the winter accordingly up to scratch. In addition, you should also regularly impregnate your awning.

Impregnating the awning

Of course, you do not have to do this every year. Among other things, it depends on which products you use for impregnation - for example, paraffin or durable nano-impregnations. At the latest, if you find that water no longer bubbles, but is absorbed by the awning covering, you should re-impregnate them.

Awning maintenance and care in detail

In addition, your awning also requires a certain amount of maintenance and care, which goes beyond simple cleaning. Most of the awnings are hinged arm awnings (cassette awnings are also included). These awnings are characterized mainly by their technical structure. This includes a lot of moving mechanics. According to the care and maintenance scope:

  • Clean articulated arms and relubricate (only suitable means!)
  • Check and maintain smooth running of the non-return valve
  • Check the setting of the awning
  • Check adjustment of articulated arms
  • Set awning motor

Clean bearing and relubricate

When the awning squeaks, many thoughtless people instinctively resort to lubricating oil or grease to correct the squeak. But they usually hurt their awning more. Because the storage of modern awnings, which are responsible for the squeaking, usually consist of the following materials:

  • Teflon
  • plastic
Be sure to use only suitable lubricants!

Conventional greases and oils attract but dirt particles formally. At first this will give a smooth running, followed by an even faster starting and even heavier binding than you wanted to fix it. The situation is similar with silicone spray. You should only use this if you have nothing else.

Products for bearing cleaning and lubrication

Depending on whether the bearings are made of plastic or Teflon, there are special sprays that eliminate squeaking. These include Teflon spray or PTFE. But first you have to clean the bearings. Suitable for this purpose are petroleum or paint cleaners - again depending on which material the bearings consist or how they are coated. You should therefore read the operating instructions of the awning manufacturer, which cleaning and lubricants are approved.

Moving awning parts

If you know this, you will need to clean and spray different areas of the awning:

  • the kinks of the articulated arms
  • the suspension of the articulated arms (at the top of the awning)
  • if present, the guide channels and associated bolts (recoil protection)

Do not disassemble these parts, otherwise there is a high risk of injury. The articulated arms and ropes are under tremendous tension.

Adjustment work - the angle of inclination and articulated arms

Maintenance and care of your awning also requires that you check the angle of inclination of your awning at least once a year, as well as whether the articulated arms unload and retract evenly. To adjust the articulated arms of your awning, please click here.

Finally, then the engine must be checked. Pull the awning completely off and on again to see if the corresponding end positions are still correct. If not, you must set the awning motor.

Tips & Tricks

You should clean the awning after the long service life, ie in the spring and before the gardening season. Cleaning and lubricating the spherical plain bearings should take place at the same time. In addition, it does not hurt to carry out this work before the "wintering" again. All other mechanical settings within the scope of care and maintenance then preferably also do with the "spring cleaning".
